With that said, how does Professor Ramsay do when it comes to showing us the formula for a ready radio jam? 'Pop 101,' released this week, gives plenty of examples on what you'll need to include during your session. "Guitars and strings to sound like Black Eyed Peas" and "heartfelt pop anthems from Mumford and his Sons" are just a few of the many references he makes to mainstream artists, and overall, it's pretty hysterical. He drops the pitch of his voice to channel Miley Cyrus' 'We Can't Stop' while stating "I can pitch shift my voice if I want" and also mocks Ke$ha's vocal melody. He touches on lyric cliches too, like "DJ never let me go," "pour shots and then we'll lose control," "baby, baby, baby, baby," and "higher, desire, and fire." You can probably connect the dots on who those are referring to. Marianas Trench isn't alone on the track either: it includes rapper Anami Vice dropping a couple lines about how rappers in pop songs are only there to fill space (*cough* Maroon 5's 'Payphone'). By the end, you've got a decent understanding of what goes on in the songs that rule the charts, and it's all piled in a nice little four minute song.

It's funny, because even though 'Pop 101' is obviously a parody, it does very well as a pop song on its own. The verses are wacky in the best ways possible, like when talking about Mumford & Sons, it actually turns into your typical folk track before breaking out into a ridiculously catchy chorus. In fact, it's probably one of the most addicting hooks in the band's discography, and it's bound to be another hit in Marianas Trench's catalog. Perhaps this could be the one that crosses them over to the U.S, too. Overall, it's a great "welcome back" from a band that hasn't released new music in a couple of years. Marianas Trench has been in the studio working on a new record allegedly set for release by the end of this year, and if 'Pop 101' is any evidence as to what's to come, we can't wait to see what else is up their sleeves.
