In the week when pretty much everyone has been talking about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, one big name is resolutely indifferent to the hype. Madonna, the original queen of controversial iconography, says that E. L. James’ bestsellers are “not very sexy.”

In a new interview with Billboard, she said that she wouldn’t be in much of a hurry to see the movie adaptation, released on February 13th. She dismissed it as “pulp fiction. It's not very sexy,” questioning that maybe it is aimed at “someone who has never had sex before.”

She continued: “I kept waiting for something exciting and crazy to happen in that red room thing, and I was like, 'Hmm, a lot of spanking'. I also thought, 'This is so unrealistic because no guy goes down on a girl that much'. I'm sorry, but no one eats p**sy as much as the guy in that book.”

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ became a literary phenomenon when it was published in 2011, expanding quickly into a trilogy. Its author E. L. James has had a large say in the production of the new movie, which has reportedly led to friction with its director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

The 56 year old star also spoke about her forthcoming album Rebel Heart, due to be released in March after suffering from unauthorised leaks of some of its tracks. She was asked about criticism from some quarters of her recurrent use of the word ‘b***h’ on the record, and replied “I think that's bullshit. The word police can f--- off. I don't want to be policed! I'm not interested in political correctness. The word "b***h" means a lot of different things. Everything is about context.”
