Veteran pop star will auction painting to raise funds for girls' education overseas
Not one to be outdone by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Madonna recently announced that she will be selling an abstract painting worth around $7 million in order to raise money to educate girls in Afganistan, Pakistan and other countries in which female education is either a rarity or does not exist at all, Reuters reports.
The painting that Madonna will auction is named Trois Femmes a la table rouge,’ by the French artist Fernand Leger and the pop singer has said that she wishes to trade the valuable painting for the means to educate young girls. She bought the 1921 painting at auction in 1990 and will now sell it, in order to raise money for her Ray of Light Foundation. “I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls' schools,” Madonna said. “We don't have time to be complacent. I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable – Educating Girls!” The painting is due to be sold on May 7 at Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art sale in New York.
Angelina Jolie is also launching her very own designer jewellery range, in order to raise money for an education project for girls, in a village near Kabul, in Afghanistan.
