Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda will be teaming with Oscar winning composer Alan Menken to work on songs for Disney’s forthcoming live action adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid. According to Deadline, the duo will write the songs together, while Miranda will also serve as a producer on the film.

Menken was the composer for the 1989 animated movie, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Score and shared the Oscar for Best Song with Howard Ashman. Menken has also worked on classic Disney films including Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin and has won eight Oscars during his career.

Miranda wrote and starred in hit Broadway musical Hamilton, which has won 11 Tony awards. He’s also set to star in the upcoming live action Mary Poppins sequel, alongside Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Ben Whishaw.

The 36-year-old has a particular soft spot for The Little Mermaid, having named his son Sebastian, after the crab in the Disney musical. According to Deadline, the level of Miranda’s involvement in the project is still being worked out.

At present, he isn’t writing the script, but he will supervise the story and the studio will soon be hiring a writer. The Little Mermaid is the latest in a line of upcoming live-action Disney adaptations, which includes Beauty and the Beast and Cruella with Emma Stone.

Another Little Mermaid project is also currently in development at at Universal, with Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star and Rebecca Thomas set to direct, after the departure of Sofia Coppola. The film is being produced by Working Title and Love Actually’s Richard Curtis has written the script.
