Reclusive R&B star Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file tax returns between 2005 and 2007.
Prosecutors in New Jersey claim the former Fugees star owes federal tax on more than $1.6 million (£1 million) in earnings.
Documents filed in Newark suggest Hill owns and operates four private corporations, although royalties from her records make up her primary source of income.
Each of the three tax charges against Hill carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 (£62,500) fine.
Hill is scheduled to appear in court to face the accusations on 29 June (12).
