In ‘The Hateful Eight’ Kurt Russell spends a lot of time chained to Jennifer Jason Leigh, which caused a unique set of problems for the actors during filming.
In The Hateful Eight, Kurt Russell plays bounty hunter John Ruth, who captures fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who’s wanted dead or alive for murder. But in order to make sure his captive doesn't escape John chains himself to Daisy, meaning on set the two actors couldn't get away from each other either.

To Russell, being chained to another person seemed easy when he read the script, until filming began. “That was rough,” Russell said of the experience. “That was different when I read it, I didn’t think anything of it. I though OK we’re chained together.”
“Very quickly I learned we had to do a little Fred and Ginger, we had to learn how to move with each other and then the chain itself came to represent the day. At first it was ‘like gotta get back in the chain’ and then it became, ‘well OK it’s time to chain up to do this’. Then after a while you're looking to get chained up, before you can get yourself in the right headspace for working.”

There were also times when being chained to another actor was just long and boring, as the pair had to spend hours tied together, sometimes with nothing to do. “Those were some long days,” the actor explained.
“Sometimes you were in a situation were you just had to sit there for maybe three or four hours and you were just there. Or somebody was gone with the key and you couldn't unchain. So that was a deal, that was a number.”

But with Quentin Tarantino behind the camera and a stellar cast, making The Hateful Eight was an unforgettable experience. “It’s one thing to get to work with Quentin but when he puts together a fantastic cast and they were,” Russell said.
“All of them were in their absolute prime, at the peak of there powers. That adds to the specialness by a lot. That’s something that I didn't expect and once that happened that was truly a special pleasure.”
