KT Tunstall @ Leeds Cockpit 19 th February ‘05

KT Tunstall has risen to popularity in a short space of time. Since the release of her album ‘Eye to the telescope’ last year, she has had number of appearances on television, notably the Jools Holland show ‘ Later’ which has risen her profile considerably with a wide ranging audience. This was evident on tonight’s motley crew of a crowd, young kids to old rockers – all ends of the spectrum where here to play homage to the Tunstall. Tonight’s show, as with all her others on this tour, sold out within days of the tickets going on sale.

KT came on stage to thunderous applause. She had great presence on stage if not a little overwhelmed and taken a back, as the crowd at the Cockpit can be very intense.

I thought to myself ‘All this for a girl who has not even released a single yet?’

But as she and her three-piece band swung into the opening bars of ‘Another Place To Fall’ you can see why she is so respected, not only within the music industry but also by her fans. After ‘Miniature Disasters’ & ‘Under The Weather’, both of which where sublimely played, the moment fans had waited for ‘ Black Horse & The Cherry Tree’ played single handed with the aid of her foot pedal recorder. Amazingly performed, technically as well as musically. This is to be KT’s last performance of this track before it was released on Monday.

More of the bands talents were on show with tracks like ‘Universe & U’ and the final track ‘Suddenly I See’ where trumpet and double bass where used to great effect.

Coming back on for the encore KT performed a new unreleased track ‘Throw me a rope’, a great end to a well-polished performance.

A highly recommended gig for anyone, this is only the beginning for Miss Tunstall I am sure there is much, much more to come.
