X-Men Apocalypse comes as the ninth instalment in the X-Men film series and stars Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy as Raven and Professor X. The X-Men are made up of a subspecies of humans that are born with superhuman abilities and are able to perform acts that are considered not normal for the average human.

This closing chapter of the First Class trilogy falls into the same trap as The Last Stand, the final part in the original X-Men trilogy: it shifts the focus from character detail and social commentary into a more standard effects-heavy action brawl. There's still a lot of strong character detail, and a big story that can't help but be entertaining. But it's impossible to escape the feeling that the film's scale is far bigger than it needed to be.
It's now 1983, and while Professor X (James McAvoy) works with Hank (Nicholas Hoult) to set up his school for young mutants, his old friend and nemesis Erik (Michael Fassbender) has started a family in a rural corner of Poland. But he can't hide forever. Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is roaming the world helping mutants where she can, meeting the teleporting Kurt (Kodi Smit-McPhee) in Berlin before heading to Cairo. There, CIA operative Moira (Rose Byrne) has just uncovered a bizarre underground cult that has revived the ancient super-mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), who immediately sets out on a quest to cleanse the planet and start over again. He needs four assistants, and the question is which of the X-Men will go over to the dark side.
This is the third comic book movie in a row about superheroes fighting each other, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. And it's similarly enormous (all three films are around two-and-a-half hours long), with mammoth battles that don't quite make logical sense but are compelling enough that the audience goes with them. This film has a bit more emotional depth, including back-stories that have been developed with unusual complexity. But some characters fall through the cracks.

Mutants and humans alike are familiar with the story of Apocalypse, he was the first mutant and began harnessing his power in ancient times. Now, millions of years after his reign, Apocalypse is reborn and finds himself in the middle of a modern society and shocked by the direction both human and mutant life has taken.
Feeling there are few options left, Apocalypse calls on the help of Magneto and a group of other mutants to help 'cleanse' the earth of all the citizens who have contributed to its downfall. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse - headed by Magneto - start to wreak havoc around the world and it looks like the X-Men's attempts to save it are all but lost - especially when their team is badly hurt by the loss of one member.
Brian Singer directs X-Men Apocalypse which reunites the lead cast from X-Men: Days of Future Past and sees the addition of Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.
In a post-apocalyptical Earth inhabited by only the few humans who survived the viral pandemic that wiped out most of human civilisation less than ten years ago, man and ape are at war. A troop of genetically modified apes have taken over the planet led by the enraged and long-suffering Caesar; the first ape to have been modified enough to develop human speech and intelligence. Determined not to let humankind rule over them as they once did, the apes will stop at nothing to make sure they are never subjected to brutal scrutiny ever again. However, Caesar knows deep down that there are still good men in the world, and he also knows that if those men and his primate family don't work together to create peace in the world, it will be the end of all of them.

Isaac is an avid photographer whose recently deceased father encouraged his passion throughout his childhood growing up in Australia. Following his father's funeral, he is determined to travel to a village in Greece to scatter the ashes over the rocks. However, he is in for a shock that will turn his life upside down when he is prevented from doing so by a local who informs him that his family is cursed. At first, he ignores the rumours but is haunted by hidden secrets everywhere on his journey around Europe. He discovers that his father had to run away to Australia years ago following a disturbing incident with a Jewish boy; due to his upbringing and being consistently brainwashed by both his parents that 'Jews and Muslims go to hell', he finds what he is discovering increasingly unnerving. Isaac tries in vain to escape his history but winds up getting mixed up with a young and desperate refugee called Josef who he is required to rescue and take to Australia. His European adventure quite rapidly turns in to a journey of self-discovery he'd rather not take.
This Australian drama was recently released in December 2012 and has been directed by Tony Krawitz ('Jewboy', 'The Tall Man' documentary). It is based on the novel by the award-winning author Christos Tsiolkas whose previous works, 'Head On' and 'The Slap' for example, have also been adapted to screen. The screenplay has been written by Louise Fox ('Full Frontal' TV series) in her movie debut and Krawitz has already received a nomination at the Sydney Film Festival for an Official Competition Award.

Even if the plot takes too long to come together, this film has a darkly foreboding tone that's thoroughly mesmerising, drawing us into its mysteries while touching on issues of race, religion and sexuality. It's a finely crafted film, although the filmmakers keep everything so enigmatic that we grow impatient to understand what's going on.
It centres on Australian photographer Isaac (Leslie), son of Greek immigrants who forbid their children from returning to the old country. Which of course makes them curious. Isaac's older brother Nico (Czokas) moved to Hungary years ago and never came back. And now that their father has died, Isaac decides to scatter his ashes in Greece and visit Nico. But when he gets to the ancestral village, he discovers that there's a curse on his branch of the family. It has something to do with a young Jewish boy during the war, and looking for answers in Paris and Budapest only deepens the mystery.
As Isaac travels around Europe he meets a wide variety of freaky characters who add to the film's unhinged mystery. These include his helpful Greek cousin Giulia (Skiadi) and her seductive friend Andreas (Samaras), a nutty woman (Fragos) who performs a psychic steam-reading, a Parisian couple (Balmer and Lebrun) who knew Isaac's father, an Arab woman (Bukstein) who's being trafficked, and Nico's cohort (Naor) in the drug-porn business. And there's also a homeless teen (Smit-McPhee) who seems to haunt Isaac wherever he goes.

It's set in the sleepy town of Blithe Hollow, a tourist village cashing in on its grisly history of 18th century witch trials. This is where Norman (Smit-McPhee) lives, which is a bit annoying since he can speak to the ghosts which are lurking everywhere. His parents (Mann and Garlin) dismiss this as a childhood fantasy, while his boy-obsessed teen sister (Kendrick) just ignores him. At school, the class bully (Mintz-Plasse) makes his life miserable, and just when Norman thinks things can't get worse, his vagabond uncle (Goodman) tells him that he's the next in line to make sure the town's legendary witch doesn't enact her curse on the 300th anniversary of her death.
