Kim Novak appeared at the 86th annual Academy-Awards alongside Matthew McConaughey to present an Oscar.

But as soon as the 81 year-old was on centre stage a Twitter frenzy began with trolls targeting the way her face looked.

Nearly a month and a half since the ceremony, Novak has posted an open letter on her Facebook page which addresses the "Oscar bullying."

"I'm not going to deny that I had fat injections in my face. They seemed far less invasive than a face-lift," she wrote, referring to social media users reading mean comments about her cosmetic surgery.

"In my opinion, a person has a right to look as good as they can, and I feel better when I look better," Kim continued. "I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies. We can't let people get away with affecting our lives."

The star of classic films such as 'Vertigo' and 'Bell Book' also spoke with the Associated Press via a telephone interview on Thursday (April 17th) about her initial reaction to the Twitter jabs.

"It really did throw me into a tailspin and it hit me hard," Novak said to AP. "For days, I didn't leave the house, and it got to me like it gets to kids and teenagers [who are attacked]."

"I realized that I had to stand up not only for myself but for other people that don't have the courage to do so," Novak explained to AP why she decided to speak out about the Oscars now. "I feel like I have a mission."

Her Oscar speech, when presenting the award for Best Animated feature, seemed to be hesitant at times and very disjointed, but according to Novak this was the result of taking a relaxation pill prior to walking out.

"I had taken a pill to relax-that I shouldn't have taken," she wrote in the letter. "I had been fasting for three days and it affected my behavior. I regret taking it."
