Kevin Spacey has hit back at reports he received a big payday to pose for a 'selfie' photograph with Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The House of Cards star shared a photo of the pair at an event in Cancun earlier this month (May14), writing, "1 President is real. W/Pres Nieto in #Mexico. Good meeting a man also making progress in his 1st year in office."

However, the pair faced a backlash from Mexican citizens after speculation swirled that Spacey had been paid a massive $8 million (£5 million) to attend a convention by bosses at the Mexican tourism board and have his picture taken with the politician.

Spacey has now taken to Twitter.com to deny the claims, writing, "Story about Mex Gov paying 8m (million) or any amount for selfie not true! Was In Mex for Tourist Board event. Meeting President not planned at all."
