The streaming service made the announcement on Thursday (2nd April). 'I leave a legacy #2016,' the official House of Cards account tweeted to confirm the news. The news was also confirmed by one of the series' writers, Beau Willimon, who revealed the writers had been working on the script for months but had been unable to acknowledge there would be another season.

Earlier this year, Spacey won a SAG Award and a Golden Globe, both in the category of Best Actor, for his role in the second series of the show.

The fourth season of House of Cards will begin production this summer, according to reports in THR. The series is slated for a 2016 release.

Other Netflix Original Series including Marco Polo, Hemlock Grove, Bojack Horseman, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Orange Is the New Black and Bloodline have also been renewed.
