Netflix Inc is to launch its streaming service in Australia and New Zealand in March, with domestic rivals already shaping up for a fight. Netflix had been expected to expand into the territories for some time and the move continues its international expansion - which now reaches 50 million people.

Netflix probably didn't have any deserved winners of major Emmy awards on Monday night (August 25, 2014). 'House of Cards' - which is fast becoming pure, unadulterated fun more than anything else - was never going to beat 'Breaking Bad' in the outstanding drama category and although 'Modern Family' was the surprise winner of best comedy, 'Orange is the New Black' still had to beat the far superior 'Veep'. Still, it must have felt like two steps back for executives at the streaming service, which has poured cash into quality original content in recent years.

Nevertheless, the future is bright for Netflix and a glossy new ad featuring Ricky Gervais confirms just how far the service has grown to effectively become ingrained in modern culture. The clip opens with Gervais lounging around in front of the television, musing, "You know when you're watching your favorite Netflix show and after five straight episodes, you want to be in it?"

The trailer has been released for the upcoming comedy sequel, Horrible Bosses 2, giving us our first glimpse of the follow-up to the successful and hilarious 2011 movie. Number two (yes, there are poop jokes in the movie) sees Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day reprise their roles as the unhappy workers who find themselves in even more of a pickle than before.

After having tried to murder their respective bosses in the previous film, Nick, Dale and Kurt are now under three new bosses who are all as equally mean or deranged. The trio decide that they'll start their own business so that they don't have to take orders from superiors ever again.

The new film welcomes Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine but of course, we'll be seeing some familiar faces, such as Kevin Spacey, Jennifer, and Jamie Foxx return in the sequel.

Spacey explained to BBC news: “I don’t know why people keep writing about this. I’ve been offered no role, I’ve never read a script, no, I am not doing the next James Bond movie.” He added, “I don’t know who started the rumour but stop it.”

That would be a lot of fun. I adore him. I had some of the most seminal experiences of my career with him, both a decade ago with American Beauty and last year with Richard III.”

This wasn’t enough for Quarles though, who continued “So, any colour?”. It’s more than a little intrusive to begin with to ask the star what kind of men she likes, but to demand a race be included in her bizarre interrogation is just too much.

Barack Obama’s inauguration as the 44th President of The United States of America was a tremendous stepping-stone for the western world; a black man in charge of the free world - it was exhilarating. One of Obama’s integral selling points to voters is his communication with young people. He was supported by the likes of Matt Damon and Jay-Z in his election campaign back in 2008, and before his win in 2009 to become America’s first black president, the youth were firmly behind him.

All of this; everything I’ve just said, means nothing because Barack Obama watches 'House of Cards' and 'True Detective' – my two favourite things at the moment. Just think – for a second – think about what that means.

There’s no way Obama logged on to Netflix, typed his card details and started a free one-month trial with Netflix. Some spotty assistant did it, and knows the details. They’re probably [email protected], and the password is probably democraticz. Just imagine that.

Obama loves House of Cards. He Tweeted out telling people not to spoil it as Netflix put whole seasons of their original content at once. We’re obviously choosing to ignore the fact that Obama probably did this as a publicity stunt to maintain the vote of the youth – old people don’t even know what House of Cards is, so ignore it and assume he’s talking about a book.

Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos has hinted that the service's big-budget original drama House of Cards will run past its scheduled two seasons. Former House of Cards executive producer Rick Cleveland said last month that the Emmy-winning political drama would wrap up after its second season, though that no longer appears to be the case.

"Our intent is that the show keep going for sure," said Sarandos at Film Independent's 9th annual confab on Saturday, according to Deadline, "It was a 26-episode commitment. It was not our intent that it just run for two seasons.Talks are in progress right now."

Kevin Spacey delivered the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at this week's Edinburgh Television Festival and during his speech he didn't give the usual garb of how TV bosses have continued to bring quality television to viewers over the last year, but instead sent out a warning to those still preoccupied with the old ways of TV consumption. He claimed that the old ways of watching shows in front of the television were coming to an end and a new era of internet-based programming would soon be the norm, where "binge viewing" and freedom of selection exist over scheduled timetables.

That particular show has become one of the most discussed programmes in recent memory, and for good reason too; not just because it was well written and expertly acted, but because it was presented in a way nearly all programmes will be in the near-future (Spacey claims).

It's hard to disagree with, following some hugely ambitious shows over the past few years, including Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Homeland and Spacey's very own House of Cards. 

"Our challenge now is to keep the flame of this revolutionary programming alive by continuing to seek out new talent, nurture it, encourage it, challenge it, give it home and the kind of autonomy that the past and present . has proved it deserves," he told the audience of TV executives, according to the Guardian.

Beware the media revolution – specifically, Netflix shows at the Emmys. Four years after Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) predicted the death of traditional media, online shows – that is, programming specifically produced for online distribution – might, for the first time, upstage traditional broadcasts. The contenders are the obvious ones – Arrested Development and House of Cards. The shows are leading contenders for the Best Actor and Best Program nominations – categories, which have up until now been the exclusive domain of broadcast and cable networks.

Are online shows the way of the future?

Regardless of whether the two shows have any chance of winning - which, given their critical and audience reception, seems likely – the mere fact that the two are being considered shows a shift in the paradigm, so to speak. However, it might be that Netflix specifically, and not online content in general, is moving into the mainstream.

“There is enormous concentration,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on the perilous nature of the battle scenes. “It is impossible to say that it is without danger. Metal clashes, sparks literally fly.” In a statement, the Manchester International Festival (MIF) said: "An actor was hurt during one of the fight scenes in a performance of Macbeth on Wednesday night. MIF has qualified medics on site during each performance and the actor was assessed and told he was fine to continue on with the evening's performance. The actor was taken to hospital afterwards as a precaution."

Frank Ocean was among the winners at the 17th Annual Webby Awards, highlighting achievements on the internet. This year's awards were selected by judges in the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, including Huffington Post boss Arianna Huffington and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

Ocean won for his bold 'Thank You's' letter on his Tumblr, which announced his past relationship with a man. He wrote, "4 summer ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping." Ocean was roundly applauded for his decision to come out, and has since gone onto enjoy huge success with his album Channel Orange. 

Elsewhere, Jerry Seinfeld won for his web-series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, which featured guests including Ricky Gervais and Larry David. Actor Kevin Spacey received an award for his role in setting up Netflix's $100 million series House of Cards.

Netflix stock rose yesterday by a record 24 per cent, which means the company is finally making money again, instead of losing it. Netflix execs attribute the development to the company’s 2 million new subscribers in the last quarter, as well as their recent strategy of focusing on original programming. It looks like the company is finally getting back on its feet after a stock plunge two years ago. Back then, Netflix pushed away customers with the decision to separate its streaming service from its DVD rental service and to raise prices overall. It finally seems like the new strategy is taking effect, as the company announced that it finally topped $1 billion in revenue.

Market ananysts are also giving the service their seal of approval. “Unlike last year, Netflix stock appears to be set for clear sailing now,” Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Vasily Karasyov said in a research note, quoted by The Boston Herald. “What we think is interesting is how the company’s original programming strategy is converging with that of a domestic premium network. … Netflix is racing to ramp up original hours of versatile programming in an effort to build a brand identity with different segments of the market.”

And really, if the company’s first original production, House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey, is anything to go by, that can only spell good things for Netflix users.

House of Cards is the most watched show on Netflix at the moment, and with all the critical backing and plaudits being rewarded to the show then it is easy to see why the original author of the book, Michael Dobbs, is happy with how things are going.

Dobbs was speaking on BBC's Daily Politics yesterday (Feb 12) when he gushed about the success of the Americanisation of his book, commending star Kevin Spacey as a fitting successor to Iain Richardson, who played the nefarious Francis Urquhart (now known as Underwood in the Netflix version) in the original BBC series from 1990. Dobbs went on to comment on how Netflix had "poured so much money into" the 13-episode series, which exceeds the original series by nine episodes. He said that the new show has embodied the "true to the spirit" of the book with its spendthrift attitude and lavish values, as it demonstrates what the show is really about - capital - before adding that he would describe the update as "The West Wing for werewolves... it will keep people awake at night".

With Arrested Development series 4 coming along soon, you could forgive people for constantly hailing Netflix's approach to delivering their series as the 'future of television'. Given House of Cards' success, who can be blamed for thinking this? The future may already be here.

We've all had that moment; looking at photos of our favourite celebs and then jumping out of our seats screaming, 'He's HOW old?!' Well, we've been doing a lot of that here at ContactMusic. Some stars seem to have crept up the age ladder pretty sneakily, the odd wrinkle and grey hair barely registering on our radar, while others don't seem to have aged at all! English football player David Beckham was in his twenties when he rose to global popularity and, looking at his recent H&M underwear advert, it seems that his iconic hairstyles and tattoos are our only way of working out the old from the newer pictures of him. However, he is only 37 and has plenty of time to catch up yet. It's the over-50s that have really had our mouths agape in recent times as we've been scouring the net for the most youthful looking middle to old aged stars.

It looks as though Amazon will be taking a page from Netflix' book and go into making their own original television shows following the success of Netflix' venture into original programming.

This could very well be the start of the future of television (not to jump to conclusions or anything) following the success of the new Netflix series House of Cards, the Kevin Spacey-staring and David Fincher-directed political drama, which has already garnered heaps of critical praise. With the long-awaited fourth season of Arrested Development on the way too, Netflix are genuinely bringing new ideas to the table in regards to the future of programming and it looks like Amazon are ready to swoop on in there before it's too late.

The online marketplace juggernaut will initially be concentrating on children's shows through their production branch, Amazon Studios. They have already announced that five kids shows are in the production stages, with pilots for each of the shows set to run on run on their streaming services Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video in the near future. This comes after the company also announced that it was planning on bringing six new comedy shows to it's expanding arsenal of products, with the show's pilots also being made available for free on their streaming services once completed. The new shows will be made available on Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video in America and Canada, and on Lovefilm in the UK and Germany.

Already described as the 'most remarkable new television drama of the year', Netflixs' ambitious project House of Cards is already making waves after airing it's premiere episode earlier this week through it's online service.

The new show, based on the 1990s BBC classic of the same name, see's star Kevin Spacey take on the role of political whip, Frank Underwood - and Spacey isn't the only household name to be attached to this huge new project. Oscar-winning film director David Fincher (who also serves as executive producer) gives the show his own unique take, whilst writer Beau Willimon (The Ides of March) has transplanted this classically British political drama into something that seems as though it was made specifically for Capitol Hill.

Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall is to return to the stage for the Old Vic's forthcoming production of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird Of Young. The Liverpool-born actress will play a failing Hollywood star who quits the movie business when her anticipated comeback is a flop, reports the Press Association.

A noted theatre actress, Cattrall appeared as Cleopatra in the Chichester revival of Janet Suzman's production of Antony and Cleopatra last summer. She's spent increasingly more time in the UK since the last Sex and the City movie and told The Independent in June, "After Sex and the City ended I was exhausted and needed time out. My marriage was coming to an end and my job was finished and my father had just been diagnosed with dementia. I thought I just needed to stop...I needed to go home. For me that was England and Canada, and England was where I started working again and I'm so glad I did, I feel replenished and strong. Sometimes you really do need to go home again." The Old Vic's spring schedule is awash with high profile names as artistic director Kevin Spacey steps up his programme at the historic venue. It includes a version of Terence Rattigan's The Winslow Boy as well as Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing with stage legends James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. "The Old Vic has always been first and foremost an actors' theatre, a home for great talent and memorable performances," said Spacey, "I am delighted to welcome Lindsay Posner back to our theatre with The Winslow Boy and I know that audiences will be thrilled at the prospect of Kim Cattrall taking on Sweet Bird Of Youth directed by Marianne Elliott, whom we are so excited to welcome for the first time."
