It’s one of the most coveted gigs a performer can land, the halftime slot at the Superbowl and this year the honour has fallen on Katy Perry. But while there had been rumours that the NFL asked the artist in consideration for the 2015 gig to ‘pay to play’, Perry has said she didn't buy her place on the show.

Katy PerryPerry is this year's halftime performer

"I put my foot down very early in the courtship," Perry told The Associated Press "I said, 'Look guys, here's where I draw a line in the sand.' I want to be invited on my own merits and not with some fine print.”

The singer went on to say that she ‘doesn't even care’ if her contract leaks. Adding, "I have nothing to hide, basically.”

Last summer, the Wall Street Journal published an article saying that the NFL had approached their top three choices for the gig, Perry, Rihanna and Coldplay and asked them for some sort of financial contribution, such as a portion of their post-game tour earnings.

Halftime performers are usually not paid for the gig, but it Is well known that the exposure can have an astronomical effect on a performer’s earnings. Last year over 115.3 million viewers tuned in to see Bruno Mars perform with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and that's the kind of advertising that, well we thought, money couldn't buy.

But turning to her performance, Perry also gave away a few details about what to expect, saying it would last 12 minutes and comprise two different "worlds," the singer also recently announced Lenny Kravitz as her guest performer.

"I'm all about female empowerment and uplifting people's spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like 'Roar' and 'Firework,' so maybe there is no better person [for the show]," Perry said. "Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance.”

This year's Superbowl takes place on February 1st and is being held in Glendale, Arizona at the University of Phoenix Stadium.
