It’s hard to believe that just over two years ago Katie Holmes was one half of the world’s most famous couple, TomKat. But since the end of her five year marriage to Tom Cruise in 2012, Katie has been focusing on her acting career and raising her eight year old daughter, Suri. Still the 35 year old often has a hard time escaping the shadow of her former marriage.

Speaking to People magazine Katie, who starred in The Giver this summer, said of her divorce from Cruise, “I don't want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am.” Before adding, ”I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now.”

Holmes, who is set to make her directorial debut with the big screen adaptation of Annie Weatherwax's All We Had, said that she now no longer has any “fear” regarding her career.

"I don't have any fear now, I don't have a lot of rules for myself, and I don't take myself that seriously,” said the actress. Adding, “I feel ready for new challenges.”

Holmes then went on to talk about her life as a single mother to eight year old Suri, "I'm learning every day, and I have been since the minute I became a mom," she said.

"My patience has grown, but between 4 and 6 p.m....I mean, wow. Between tickle fights and glitter art, I try to throw in some manners along the way.”

Holmes’ next project will be once again playing former first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis in the forthcoming Reelz Channel miniseries, 'The Kennedys: After Camelot.’ The series is the follow up to the 2011s original miniseries 'The Kennedys,’ and is expected to premiere in 2016.
