Kanye West has been unveiled as the second headline act for Glastonbury 2015. The controversial hip-hop artist will top the bill on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night, joining Friday’s headliners Foo Fighters. The third and final headliner for Sunday has not yet been confirmed.

Strong rumours emerged earlier on Monday (March 16th) that West was getting the prestigious Saturday night spot, and this was confirmed via the official Glastonbury Twitter feed and by the festival’s organiser, Emily Eavis.

A statement later appeared on the official Glastonbury website, reading: “We’re very excited to reveal that Kanye West will headline the Saturday night of this year’s Glastonbury Festival. This will be the rapper’s first appearance at the Festival.”

This means that West is to be the second hip-hop act to headline Glastonbury, after Jay Z’s appearance in 2008. That booking was seen as pretty divisive, with traditionalists such as former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher believing that hip-hop had no place at a rock festival.

Jay Z’s performance on the night was well-received in the event, particularly his cover of 'Wonderwall', and subsequent headliners from the pop and R&B world have demonstrated that the barriers are now broken down to non-rock acts at the top billing. However, Kanye is a divisive and outspoken figure, whose live sets have wildly varied in quality in the recent past.

Just last year, he attracted a lot of criticism for going on a fifteen minute mid-set rant during his headline slot at London’s Wireless festival. However, anybody who witnessed his ‘Watch The Throne’ tour will remember that he’s capable of extreme brilliance. If there's one thing that Kanye's set is not going to be, it's dull.

2015 is already shaping up to be a memorable year for Kanye. It’s only March and he’s already performed at both the Brit Awards and the Grammys, announced a collaboration with Adidas and given a handful of teasers for his forthcoming album So Help Me God.

The 2015 edition of the legendary festival is set to take place from June 24th-28th.
