The host of the MTV VMAs for 2013 will be...(drum roll)...nobody! That's right, MTV have announced they're going to go ahead with a host-less awards ceremony this year. After the award ceremony's inaugural event in 1984, only three shows have gone ahead with no host at the helm to reign in the unruly popstars and generate some bad jokes.

The evening, held in Brooklyn, New York, on 25th August will feature special performances from the cream of the crop of pop music, including Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Lady Gaga, One Direction and Kanye West. A stellar line-up, but no host.

"For this year's show, we've decided to go in a different direction than the traditional 'host' route - like we have done on multiple occasions throughout the years," an MTV spokesperson said yesterday, reports the NY Post. "Instead, we're focusing on more musical performances and surprise comedic moments for this year's VMAs."

It has been speculated that the lack of a host will allow the music, performances, awards, and surprise moments to take centre-stage after the awards ceremony experienced a drastic drop in viewing figures last year compared the year before. The 2011 VMAs pulled in 12.4m viewers but last years could only manage half - at 6m - after the weekday and time had to be changed to avoid conflict with one of Obama's speeches.

The MTV VMAs have become notorious for hosting a platform to Kanye West's rants. 2007 and 2009 saw the disgruntled rapper take to the stage to complain about someone winning an award that he didn't approve of.

Popster Justin Timberlake will not only be performing, he'll also be receiving a special honour to commemorate him as the second most awarded MTV guest of all time, after Madonna. According to MTV, he'll be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to commemorate two decades of pop perfection. 2013 will see Timberlake tied with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for the most award nominations: Video Of The Year, Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Best Editing for Mirrors, Best Collaboration for his 'Suit & Tie' team-up with Jay-Z and Best Direction.

The MTV Video Awards will be shown on MTV from 8pm on Monday August 26.
