'Star Trek 3' has been given a release date of July 8, 2016.

The much-hyped release of the sci-fi film will mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek's television series, which first hit screens on September 8, 1966, Variety reports.

The news comes shortly after it was confirmed that Justin Lin is to direct 'Star Trek 3'.

The 'Fast & Furious' director was chosen to replace Roberto Orci, who relinquished the role but opted to stay on as a producer of the film.

A number of high-profile directors were linked to the coveted role in recent weeks, including Morten Tyldum of 'The Imitation Game', but Lin was the only person to have been offered the job.

The move came after Lin's planned 'Bourne Legacy' sequel starring Jeremy Renner was delayed to allow Matt Damon to return to the Bourne franchise.

And it's been confirmed he'll turn his attentions to 'Star Trek' once he has finished working on season two of the US crime drama series 'True Detective'.

Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg are all expected to return to the 'Star Trek' franchise for the third instalment of the sci-fi reboot.
