The dress worn by Judy Garland in 'The Wizard of Oz' has sold for $480,000 at auction.

The iconic blue and white gingham garment fetched the highest price of any item during a two-day auction of Hollywood memorabilia in Beverly Hills, California, over the weekend.

The buyer of the dress is unknown.

Other highlights of the sale, which was organised by auction house Julien's Auctions, included Steve McQueen's racing jacket and a purple skirt won by Marilyn Monroe while filming 'River of No Return' in Canada, with both garments fetching $50,000.

Julie Andrews' green floral 'Sound of Music' dress went for $38, 400, sunglasses worn by Jean Reno fetched $8,320 and another buyer paid $3,250 for Johnny Depp's shades.

Despite the huge sum paid for Judy's dress, it is dwarfed by the $910,000 a similar garment worn during tests for the 1939 film sold for in 2011.

However, auctioneer Darren Julien said the difference reflected the fact fewer versions of the test dress were made.

The dress was made by the famous MGM costume designer Adrian Greenberg.
