While no official word has been given on what the singer is currently being treated for, Mitchell had previously stated she was suffering from Morgellons disease. Speaking to Billboard magazine in December Mitchell said, “I can't sing anymore – don't miss it. I can't play anymore – don't miss it. I've got all these instruments laying around and hopefully one day I'll pick them up.”

Morgellons disease is a controversial condition in the medical community with many experts claiming it is a mental illness. Describing the disease in a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times Mitchell said, “I have this weird, incurable disease that seems like it's from outer space.  Fibres in a variety of colours protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm.”

“Morgellons is a slow, unpredictable killer - a terrorist disease: it will blow up one of your organs, leaving you in bed for a year,” the singer continued. Fans wanting to send well wishes to Joni can do so through the website weloveyoujoni.com, set up by the singer's management.
