This week’s box office isn’t offering any surprises – the adorable yellow minions of Despicable Me 2 dominated the chart, while Lone Ranger went into the weekend hoping to minimize losses. On Friday, three days into its release, the animated feature had clocked in at $59 million, with the prediction of weekend sales putting it at a comfy $130 by the end of the five day period, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Even the presence of Johnny Depp couldn’t save Disney’s crack at a Western from getting knocked off the saddle (or, in this case, the top of the box office.) On Friday, the Armie Hammer starrer had raked in just $30 million (an average of $10 million for each day since its release) and predictions are placing it below the $70 million mark by the end of the weekend. While these earnings would ensure the movie stays put at a comfortable second place after its first week, they are nowhere near meeting the studio’s expectations. Despicable Me 2’s opening now marks it as the film with second highest July 4 opening earnings – after Michael Bay’s Transformers.

The same couldn't be said, however, of The Lone Ranger.

The surprises largely stop there, with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat occupying the third slot in the Friday chart – the film’s $8.9 million earnings on the day add up to a total of $70 million over its entire run, according to Box Office Mojo.
