In 1968, Cash married June Carter, a member of the famed Carter Family. They had one son, John Carter Cash, and frequently performed together until June’s death in 2003.

Cash struggled with amphetamine and barbiturate addiction in the 1960s but overcame his dependence with the support of June and his renewed Christian faith. Diagnosed with Shy-Drager syndrome, a neurodegenerative disease, in 1997, Cash continued recording music until his death in 2003, just four months after June’s passing.
