John Mayer Doesn't Have A 'Cool Enough' Response About Being Katy Perry's Best Lover

Katy Perry John Mayer

John Mayer has finally responded to Katy Perry's claims on 'The Late Late Show' that he was her best lover - and we don't really understand what it's supposed to mean. He managed to skirt around the subject so swiftly, that we can't even tell whether or not he's pleased.

Katy Perry made headlines recently following a game of 'Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts' with James Corden on 'The Late Late Show'. He deigned to ask the 'Bon Appetit' singer to rank her ex-boyfriends in order of how adept they are at love-making, and while she seemed less than comfortable with the prospect, she confessed that John Mayer was the best.

Kendall Jenner’s cryptic Instagram about ‘mean’ boys got us wondering about whether she was referencing her recent split from One Direction member Harry Styles, or if it was just a general mantra for all girls to remember. John Mayer: Before Katy Perry His Colourful Romantic History

John Mayer Katy Perry

It seems that John Mayer and Katy Perry might have finally split for good, but honestly who didn’t see that one coming? For over a decade John Mayer’s been romancing his way through some of the hottest women in show business, leaving us to wonder how does he do it?

John Mayer John Mayer, he's had a few girlfriends

Back in 2002 John Mayer didn't have the lothario reputation we’ve come to know him for. Instead he was dating Jennifer love Hewitt. The ‘Party of Five’ actress was even thought to be the inspiration for his breakout hit ‘Your Body is a Wonderland’. The pair stayed together for the best part of a year before the newly famous John called it quits. Next up John found himself in an even more high profile relationship this time with newly single singer Jessica Simpson. Simpson had been famous for her marriage to 98 Degrees star Nick Lachey which had played out on their reality show before their divorce. Jessica and John dated between 2006 and 2007 before the relationship fizzled out. After the split, John’s reputation as a bad ex boyfriend began after he gave a rather unclassy interview to Playboy magazine where he dished the dirt on the couple’s sex life. Amazingly he still managed to get dates after this.

Katy Perry's Most Personal Album Is Also Her Most Popular One To Date

Katy Perry Russell Brand John Mayer

Katy Perry is currently enjoying her recent return to the top of the pop agenda, releasing her fourth studio album to rave reviews and eager audience anticipation, and already enjoying tremendous success on the back of her her last two singles. Crammed with the usual dose of bubblegum pop numbers, Prism also features some more mature numbers, and the lyrics on the album are by far some of her most personal to date. Maybe that's why critics are in love with it so much.

Katy Perry Prism
Perry is enjoying critical and commercial success with her new album

According to review aggregator MetaCritic, Prism has enjoyed the most positive critical reception of any other KP release, with many of the songs enjoying some credible moments next to the usual presence of throwaway pop numbers that Perry is known for. Some reviews are positively glowing, although others are a little harsher, however there are few that just berate the album content. On the back of this critical success, Prism has managed to score some impressive sales figures already, and has been climbing up album charts across the world.

How Russell Brand Helped Katy Perry's New Album, 'Prism'

Katy Perry Russell Brand John Mayer

For many people, a divorce can be a terrible experience, hounded by despair and loneliness, and it appears that even Katy Perry went through the same emotions but she managed to channel them into chart-climbingly catchy music à la Taylor Swift on her latest album, Prism.

Katy Perry Prism
Divorce Took A Heavy Emotional Toll On Katy.

With lead track 'Roar' unleashed last month to give us a sniff of her new, starker direction, it was evident that Prism wasn't exactly going to be a record of doom metal, rather the same power pop fluff we've become accustomed to from Ms. Perry. However, there was no question about whether Katy's new stance advocated standing up for herself, feeling empowered, and moving on to better things; a strength reportedly resulting from her divorce from British comedian, Russell Brand.

John Mayer Katy Perry

John Mayer new song 'Who You Love' features his girlfriend, the pop-star Katy Perry. The track features on Mayer's new album Paradise Valley, which is scheduled to hit stores on August 20.

It's fairly standard ballad, featuring patches of Mayer's signature guitar and a little brass towards the end. Lyrically, it's pretty repetitive and Perry only manages to open up her vocal chords towards the end of the track, though never really reaches top gear.

"That you love, who you love, you love, who you love, who you love, you love, who you love, who you love. You can't make yourself stop dreaming of who you're dreaming of, if it's who you love," sings Mayer in the chorus.

Katy Perry Confirms John Mayer Will Not Feature On 'Prism' (Well Dodged, John)

We can almost imagine the conversation. Katy Perry, over a hot mug of cocoa, asks boyfriend John Mayer, "Hey John, want to lend your guitar skills to my new album? It's called Prism and it's really poppy and cool." "Err...I think I've actually got a thing on that day. I've definitely got a thing. It's a blues...festival, thing."

It was most definitely a close call, but good old John managed to dodge the Katy Perry album credit. The pop star confirmed the news to E! Online at the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie The Smurfs 2, "He is not, actually," she said when asked if Mayer would appear, "But thank you for asking."

Despite announcing the album details in the most elaborate way possible - on the side of a massive gold truck - Perry was strangely unforthcoming at the premiere, "It's gonna be three years later, how about that? Pick up where we left off," she said when asked what fans can expect from her sound.

John Mayer Plays New Material On Opening Night Of 'Born And Raised' Tour

John Mayer Katy Perry

John Mayer was genuinely emotional after taking to the stage for the first night of his 'Born and Raised' tour in Milwaukee on Saturday evening (July 13, 2013). It was the blues musician's first time on-stage for a headlining show since doctors successfully repaired a granuloma in his throat last August.

As noted by Rolling Stone, Mayer's voice was still the elephant in the room at the Marcus Amphitheatre, with the singer taking many songs down into a lower key. Particular changes were noticeable on 'Waiting on the World to Change,' though Mayer remained confident throughout and his virtuoso guitar playing was as dynamic as ever.

"I've spent many, many months dreaming of this night," said the musician before closing out his comeback show, "It's a long time coming." There was also a shout out to his girlfriend - or former girlfriend depending on what you read - Katy Perry. "She was so patient," he said, adding that she took the time "to continue to get know me and love me" before dedicating the evening's final song, "A Face To Call Home" to her.

Paper Doll Continues The Cold War Between John Mayer And Taylor Swift

John Mayer Taylor Swift

Oh no he didn’t! John Mayer has released his latest single, Paper Doll, and some of the lyrics sound oddly reminiscent of the tunes of an old flame – Taylor Swift herself. It wouldn’t be that strange for Mayer to address a song to his ex, despite the fact that the brief relationship ended in 2010 – after all, Taylor is said to have drawn inspiration for a number of songs from her relationship with the crooner, particularly the bitter-toned Dear John. But some of the lyrics of Paper Doll are far from subtle, almost directly referencing Taylor’s music. Check out the tune (and its genuinely odd video) for yourself:

At the beginning of the track, Mayer croons "Here's a dress of gold and blue/Sure was fun being good to you," which could be seen as a link to Swift's Dear John lyric where she refers to herself as "the girl in the dress [who] cried all the way home." But some of the most clinching evidence comes from the lyric: "You're like 22 girls in one/and none of them know what they're running from It’s not a huge mental leap from that to Swift’s hit from earlier this year, 22. Also in Dear John, Taylor proclaimed she'd look back on her relationship with Mayer "and regret how I ignored when they said 'Run as fast as you can.”

Katy Perry Reveals Russell Brand Texted Her For Divorce

Katy Perry Russell Brand John Mayer Robert Pattinson

It's every relationship's worst nightmare: being dumped by text - only this time Russell Brand ramped up the rudeness by asking former wife Katy Perry for a divorce in a New Year's text.

Speaking to US Vogue magazine in a candid interview, 28 year-old Perry spoke of the pitfalls of her 14 month marriage and identified Brand's ego as a key reason their marriage failed: "I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're, like, I can't handle the equalness. He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour."

Perry described 38 year-old British comedian Brand as "smart" and "magical" until he became "controlling, which was upsetting."

Is 'Paper Doll' John Mayer's Response To Taylor Swift's 'Dear John'?

John Mayer Taylor Swift Eamon

John Mayer has a new song out, one that the singer has seemingly written in a fit of inspiration after listening to a song by one of his exes; Taylor Swift. Mayer's 'Paper Doll' features numerous references to Taylor Swift's single 'Dear John,' which was an attack on John basically for being a scumbag.

The track isn't just another slanging match between two former lovers a la Frankee and Eamon, but instead it seems to be more of a direct response to the song 'Dear John' itself. Mayer makes numerous references to dresses throughout the song, a clear response to Swift's description of herself as "the girl in the dress" in her song, with the rockstar nonsensically singing, "Here's a dress of gold and blue/Sure was fun being good to you," at the beginning of the song.

The chorus is the main giveaway that Mayer is trying to get all up in Taylor's grill, going for the jugular with the line, "You're like 22 girls in one/and none of them know what they're running from," checking Taylor's single about how good being 22 is when you're rich as well as making a reference to the 'Dear John' lyric "and regret how I ignored when they said 'Run as fast as you can.'"

Taylor Swift Entertainment

Taylor Swift Jake Gyllenhaal John Mayer Harry Styles

Taylor Swift had fans and critics baffled when she made the comment that she doesn’t normally go for guys in the entertainment industry.

Say what? That seems a bit puzzling, considering that Taytay has been giving gossip websites a stable supply of material in the past couple of years, from dating Jake Gyllenhall a few years back, through to John Mayer and her most recent fling with One Direction’s resident Don Juan, Harry Styles. Not to mention the fact that, after dating them, Swift has developed a habit of immortalizing the relationships in songs – usually ones that end up near the top of the Billboard chart. It must be hard to have your ex write a song about you and then have that song outsell your own. Ask Harry, or John or, well, most of them, really.

Still, the “22” singer insists that she isn’t usually the one to initiate contact, it’s actually the guys that do the chasing. “It's not like I go for people in the entertainment industry,” she told The Times magazine. “Those have been the types that have gone for me recently.” And, well, looking at the 23-year-old songstress’s track record so far, we can’t help but admit, she’s probably quite a catch – even with the possibility of having a scornful chart-topper written about you, if it all falls apart. Those are still some great life choices you’ve got there, Ms Swift.

So, Were Katy Perry And Russell Brand Making Out At Soho House?

Katy Perry Russell Brand John Mayer

No, is the answer to that question. No, Katy Perry and Russell Brand weren't seen "full on making out" in the valet line at El Lay's Soho House this week, as was originally reported by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. The story picked up some serious speed as it circulated around blogs and social network, though Hilton has since admitted that his sources were "100% wrong" on the matter.

Just a few hours later, Perez issued an apology to both Perry and Brand, writing "A source told us today that they saw Katy Perry and her ex-husband Russell Brand making out, but we have confirmation now it simply wasn't true! We're so sorry for jumping the gun on this one, KatyCat and Russ! We were just so excited to imagine two of our favorites were rekindling an old flame, we must've been blinded by our love for you guys as a couple!!"

The original report appeared to carry a little credence, given Katy Perry recent split with blues musician John Mayer, however, she is ready to sell the marital home that she shared with Russell Brand during their short marriage. The singer is selling the $7 million Hollywood Hills property through US estate agents after failing to secure a private deal. It features 11 bathrooms, 7 bedrooms, a swimming pool and its own waterfall.

John Mayer And Katy Perry Call Time On Relationship

John Mayer Katy Perry

Katy Perry should have known what she was getting herself in for by going out with ladies man and general gadabout John Mayer, but we feel that the news of this break-up might not have all been a one way street, given how recently the soft-rock star spoke about his feelings to his on again off again partner.

Yep, it looks like it’s done and dusted for the pair – again – with sources confirming to Us Weekly that the two performers were no longer an item. "It's sad," one insider said, though they did suggest it might not be a case of the fat lady singing just yet, going on to add "It's not over until it's over. You have to see how things play out." Another source appeared to back that up, saying: "She's leaving the window open. They have both been so focused on work."

Despite Mayer’s lairy reputation with the female sex, if it is work getting in the way of the couple then that’s pretty understandable, with Perry in particular renowned for her hugely busy schedule which never seems to cease. The pair started dating casually in the summer of 2012, only to break it off in August. However by September they were back together and as recently as February, Mayer was telling CBS “I don't feel like I'm in a celebrity relationship. For the first time in my life I don't feel like I'm in a celebrity relationship. I really don't… for me it feels like something that's very human." Looks like it could be John whose been the one left heartbroken for once.

Katy Perry And John Mayer Split, But For How Long?

Katy Perry John Mayer

Another one bit the dust this week when Katy Perry and her (relatively) long term significant other John Mayer decided to call it quits on their relationship, ending 8 months of what seemed to be a happy and functioning relationship. However, murmurings that the relationship could be back on as quick as it started are already rife, as many are claiming that the latest Tinseltown split is merely a trial separation.

According to US Weekly, the musical twosome ended things for good - having distanced themselves in August last year before a quick reconciliation - however a source close to the pair told the magazine that Katy was still open to a reunion. The sources speaking to the magazine lamented that one of the reasons why they split was down to their hectic work schedule and when things quiet down again then maybe the two will get back together, with one saying, 'It's not over until it's over. You have to see how things play out.'

The chances of this happening seemed to be on the up when an insider spoke to Hollywoodlife.com yesterday (March 19) to reveal that the recent falling out is 'more of a break than a break-up,' before adding, 'You’ll probably see them hanging out sooner then later and hooking up again. They remain very friendly.'

Engaged? Not So For Scarlett Johansson And Romain Dauriac

Scarlett Johansson Katy Perry John Mayer

We really wish that celebrities would learn to keep their ring fingers free and un-adorned, unless they are definitely getting engaged and willing to admit to it. All of this chasing around, staring at pictures of celebrities’ ring fingers is really starting to tire us out. The latest offender in the mis-wearing of rings is Scarlett Johansson, who was pictured holding hands with her boyfriend Romain Dauriac and sporting a ring on her ring finger.

However, E! Online have quashed the rumor that Scarlett’s getting engaged, after speaking to her rep. Apparently there was no big reason behind Johansson’s decision to wear the rather large, sparkly ring on her wedding ring finger and her relationship with the French journalist hasn’t progressed to the ‘getting hitched’ stage just yet. Scarlett and Romain began dating last year – the news was made public not long after Scarlett’s split from Nate Naylor became common knowledge.

Scarlett isn’t the only one who’s been forced to deny rumours of a secret engagement, either. After her Valentine’s day date, Katy Perry was spotted wearing an eye-catching heart-shaped ruby ring on her ring finger, forcing her reps to deny that she had gotten engaged to her current beau John Mayer. Katy, of course, was previously married to Russell Brand. After such a public and non-too-friendly split, we cant imagine she’d be rushing back up the aisle just yet.

Benefit For Firefighters Marks The End Of John Mayer's Hiatus

John Mayer

If you woke up today with a nagging lack of John Mayer in your life, fret not!

After a 10-month leave of absence, the Your Body Is A Wonderland singer is back! Meyer took the break, in order to heal his vocal chords from a granuloma, which prevented him from performing.

Well, no more. Recently, Mayer’s in the news more for getting cozy with Katy Perry, rather than his music, but hopefully for him at least, that is all about to change. His first act as a back-in-the-game musician was performing at a benefit at Bozeman, MT, where he has taken residence. The benefit was for firefighters, who fought the devastating blaze in Pine Creek last month. Not only a comeback, then, but a good deed as well – that’s what we call two birds with one stone. "Tonight John sang 'Speak For Me' at the Livingston Town Proper. And we're back," read a message on Mayer’s Twitter fan page.

Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' About Harry Styles (We Analyse The Lyrics!)

Taylor Swift Harry Styles John Mayer Jake Gyllenhaal One Direction

Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' was written about her current boyfriend Harry Styles, it has been confirmed by Hollywood Life.com. The song was originally thought to be about one of her exes John Mayer or Jake Gyllenhaal, but it turns out the One Direction heartthrob is actually the subject!

A source privy to the song-writing process said, "The song 'Trouble' is definitely about Harry. Taylor told Harry it's about him. She references flying around America following One Direction's tour in the song." After assessing the lyrics, it's certainly plausible that the song is about Harry, with one line "when you saw me dancing" possibly referring to when Swift danced in the audience to One Direction at the Kid's Choice Awards in March 2012. "Flew me to places I'd never been," could refer to when Styles allegedly paid for the country star to jet in and watch him in concert.

Other lines in the track appear to hint at someone other than Styles, for example, "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be, And now I see, now I see, now I see, He was long gone when he met me, And I realize the joke is on me, hey." It suggests acrimony, a split or a broken heart - something not associated with the couple's relationship. Not yet anyway.

Watch: Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble Video: Gyllenhaal, Mayer Or Kennedy?

Taylor Swift Jake Gyllenhaal John Mayer Taylor Lautner Harry Styles

Taylor Swift's 'I Knew You Were Trouble' video is based on real life experiences, the country-pop superstar has revealed. The new single is based on one of the singer's past relationships and the video tells the story of a girl getting sucked into a relationship while losing her true identity in the process.

"I had just gone through an experience that made me write this song about like knowing the second you see someone, 'Oh this is going to be interesting. It's going to be dangerous, but look at me going in there anyway', she told MTV News. Hmmm, so who could the song and video be about? Her current squeeze Harry Styles is too recent, while Joe Jonas doesn't really fit the 'dangerous' tag. Taylor Lautner is hardly a bad boy, so that leaves blues musician John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor Kennedy. Swift explained, "My favourite thing [about the video] is that this girl not only gets sucked into this relationship with him but she loses who she was before and that's the saddest part of losing him, is that she can't remember who she was before she met him." Things seemed to be going swimmingly for Swift and Kennedy, while her relationship with Gyllenhaal was surely too brief to really 'change' her. It's got to be Mayer, right?

I Knew You Were Trouble is the second single from Swift's huge selling album Red. Like first single We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, it was co-written and co-produced by Swedish pop producer Max Martin  - the man behind Maroon 5's One More Night, Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl, Britney Spears' Hold It Against Me and Taio Cruz's Dynamite.

50th Anniversary Rolling Stones Gig Highlights

Rolling Stones Lady GaGa Bruce Springsteen Black Keys John Mayer

Last night’s 50th anniversary gig at the Prudential Center in Newark saw The Rolling Stones still very much at the top of their game, as the band performed some of their greatest hits and collaborated with a star-studded list of guest performers.

Among those were acts like John Mayer (bet you didn’t see that one coming), who rocked out alongside Keith Richards, giving the rock legend a run for his money, as well as The Black Keys and none other than the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen, who joined The Stones for Tumbling Down. All in all, it was a good night for rock, with the band putting all of their energy into classic hits like 'Brown Sugar', 'Start Me Up,' 'Sympathy for the Devil' and the ever popular '(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.'  The most unusual collaboration of the night had to have been with Lady GaGa though, who joined the band for a rendition of 'Gimme Shelter' and it was actually, well, good. The Stones have a history of performing with more poppy artists on occasion, such as Mary J Blige and Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine fame) and it always seemes to work out. It did again this time, with Gaga flaunting not only her impressive singing chops but also her no less spectacular shimmying skills alongside Mick Jagger.

Last night’s gig also had a more serious aspect to it, however, as the Stones and their guest stars took the time to honour the victims of the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. “I just wanted to take a minute and send our love and condolences to those who lost their loved ones yesterday,” Jagger commented solemnly, before going into a performance of 'Wild Horses,' dedicated to the victims.

Budding Romance Between Katy Perry And John Mayer Finally Going Public

Katy Perry John Mayer

Katy Perry and John Mayer are still going strong.

Stronger than ever it would seem, as the couple have made a number of public appearances together of late. They have been dating since July, but Katie and John have definitely not been afraid to go public as of late. The couple attended their first red carpet event together on Wednesday, at the premiere of A Christmas Story: The Musical on Broadway, making their debut together, reports E! Online. Afterwards, the two had dinner with Mayer’s father, Richard, reaching a relationship milestone that’s probably more recognizable to the rest of us non-Hollywood types. Meeting the parents is a big one, we’ve been told. But the PDAs didn’t stop there.

Love is definitely in the air around this time of year, especially for this couple. Yesterday, the pair continued their extended pre-holiday celebration with at the Rolling Stones concert at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J, where they looked more couple-y than ever. With all of the budding celebrity romances of late, it looks like the Christmas spirit really is contagious, at least in Hollywoodland. And hey, who are we to argue with a nice pop star love story around the holidays?

Katy Perry Starts Work On New Album For Summer 2013

Katy Perry John Mayer

Katy Perry is working on her new album with Greg Wells and Bonnie McKee, with whom she has already worked on previous albums One of the Boys and Teenage Dreams.

The 'Fireworks' singer has been keeping a relatively low profile since the breakdown of her marriage to notorious lothario Russell Brand last year. She's still feeling so uncomfortable around him, despite now happily dating John Mayer, that she felt the need to hide under a table when Russell Brand walked in the door of the restaurant she and Mayer were dining at, before making a sharp exit, reported the Sun. However, the low profile looks set to end as there are a number of reports stating that Perry will be back in the studio in no time as she's now working on a new album, with the hopes of it being released next summer, according to Yahoo.

Reported by MTV back in June of this year Perry explained what she wants of her next album, saying "I would love to just let it be the 'black box' of who I am." As well as revealing that it'll be 'much darker'. However, all of this directly followed the official finalisation of her divorce to Brand. Perhaps now that she's loved up to Mayer she's out of that 'darker' place and finding some light. We'll have to wait until next summer to find out.

Taylor Swift's New Album Is Red Hot

Taylor Swift Jake Gyllenhaal Taylor Lautner John Mayer

America's Southern sweetheart, Taylor Swift, has released her fourth studio album entitled 'Red'. She has sold over 22 million records, won countless awards (including 5 Grammys), been praised by all walks of life for her musical talent, her generosity of spirit, her philanthropic work, and her work and influence in the promotion of education, inclusion and of non-prejudicial cultures of thought. Pretty good for a 22 year old, eh?

This new album lives up to our expectations and to her character. ABC News reports that she thinks of it as her "most adventurous album yet", saying: "I got to explore the edges of what I'm allowed to do." The general theme behind the majority of the album is what she has always sung about: relationships, romance and heartbreak. But she says that's what she enjoys most: "I really tend to draw inspiration from my life and from the characters in my life.... for me [it's] something I've always loved doing, watching life play out and kind of making a song out of that."

No doubt, just like her entire back catalogue of music, we'll all be speculating on who each song is about. She admits to the New York Daily News that the album is "really kind of diary entries of the last two years of [her] life", so indeed the themes and feeling of her music aren't plucked out of thin air. Given Swift's wide array of high profile romantic involvement, we can't help but question whether they're about Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas, John Mayer, or even current beau Conor Kennedy. However, although this kind of gossip is inevitable, let's hope that the majority of publicity for this bright star will focus on her aforementioned work and talent, so we may encourage her to continue being the fantastic role model that she is.

Katy Perry Fails To Come Up With Original Fancy Dress Outfit

Katy Perry John Mayer Skrillex Ellie Goulding Neil Patrick Harris Kristen Stewart

Katy Perry kicked off her birthday festivities this weekend by throwing a predictably lavish costume-party at Los Angeles' Magic Castle nightspot. The singer turns 28 on Thursday (Oct 25, 2012), though hardly made an effort to upstage her famous guests by dressing as a fairly standard vampire.

It was beau John Mayer who put a little more thought into his outfit, opting to arrive as a vampire hunter complete with prosthetic nose and chin, reports US Weekly. Elsewhere, Kristen Stewart snuck into the event fairly unnoticed, while house music DJ Skrillex and girlfriend Ellie Goulding were snapped in some pretty poor looking skeleton outfits. Diane Warren, Johnny Wujek, David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris were also in attendance. The 'How I Met Your Mother' star tweeted a photograph from the event, adding, "Thank you @KatyPerry for having @DavidBurtka and me at your frightfully fun B'day Bash at the @MagicCastle last night."

Earlier in the weekend, Katy had joined Mayer's family and friends to celebrate his 35th birthday at Freemans restaurant on Manhattan's Lower East Side.

New Direction? Taylor Swift Goes Dubstep On ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’

Taylor Swift Britney Spears Muse Skrillex Ellie Goulding John Mayer

Taylor Swift goes dubstep on ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’? The country music star has always had one foot in the mainstream pop arena but Taylor Swift’s new song is really something else. She’s not the first to dabble in a spot of dubstep, of course; Britney Spears famously did it, with her track ‘Hold It Against Me,’ released last year and more recently, Muse have let elements of the formerly underground dance sound into their music. Dubstep may have originated in Croydon, in the UK but now that Skrillex has popularized the genre Stateside, it seems that everyone wants a piece of the action. Might as well do the whole ‘female singer-songwriter goes dubstep’ thing before Skrillex’s girlfriend Ellie Goulding gets in on the action, eh?

Taylor Swift debuted the track on Good Morning America and introduced the song by saying that it was one of her favorite tracks from the new album Red “It sounds just as chaotic as the feeling was when I wrote it. It’s a song about kind of being frustrated with yourself, because here you are heartbroken, and you knew when you first saw that person, you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway.” She doesn’t speak about her new love of dubstep but the production on ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ is undeniable. It basically sounds like classic Swift, but with added ‘whomp’!

Fans will be left wondering if this new direction has got legs, or if Taylor’s going to stick to traditional country ground from now on. And, of course, they will be wondering which of her unlucky exes the song’s about! John Mayer, perchance?

Taylor Swift Calls John Mayer "Presumptious" For Assuming 'Dear John' Was About Him

Taylor Swift John Mayer

Taylor Swift has called her former boyfriend John Mayer "presumptious" for assuming that songs written by the country singer related to their past relationship. It's long been believed by Mayer that Swift's song Dear John is aimed at him. However, USA Today reports that Swift told print magazine Glamour "How presumptuous! I never disclose who my songs are about."

Swift then refused to discuss the issue further, or hear what Mayer had said about the song. "I know it wasn't good, so I don't want to know. I put a high priority on staying happy, and I know what I can't handle." She said. Upon being asked if it would hurt too much for her to hear, Swift replied "It's not that I'm this egomaniac and I don't want to hear anything negative, because I do keep myself in check," explains Swift. "But I've never developed that thick a skin. So I just kind of live a life, and I let all the gossip live somewhere else. If you go too far down the rabbit hole of what people think about you, it can change everything about who you are."

It was a turbulent time with ladies man Mayer, but things seem to be going smoother for Swift in her new relationship with John F. Kennedy descendent Conor Kennedy.

John Mayer Was ‘Presumptuous’ About Taylor Swift’s ‘Dear John’

Taylor Swift John Mayer Joe Jonas Jake Gyllenhaal Ed Sheeran

Taylor Swift has called John Mayer “presumptuous” whilst talking in an interview, reports The Huffington Post.

Swift refused to confirm that the lyrics of the song were written about Mayer, though they do seem to closely follow the pattern of their relationship, with the lines “Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?” The singer wasn’t drawn into detail though; "I don’t talk about my personal life in great detail," Swift asserted whilst talking to Glamour. "I write about it in my songs, and I feel like you can share enough about your life in your music to let people know what you're going through." She also added that she’d never read what Mayer said about her, and that he had no plans to. "It's not that I'm this egomaniac and I don’t want to hear anything negative, because I do keep myself in check. But I've never developed that thick a skin. So I just kind of live a life, and I let all the gossip live somewhere else. If you go too far down the rabbit hole of what people think about you, it can change everything about who you are." Indeed, Taylor. Other ex-boyfriends should take note; we’re looking at you, Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal. Be careful.

One of the more cryptic Taylor Swift songs, We Are Never Getting Back Together, apart from being succinct in its title, has broken records for Swift, making her the most downloaded female artists in one week. Her forthcoming album, Red, is due for release on October 22nd, and will feature songs written by Ed Sheeran.

Frank Ocean Makes Waves On Saturday Night Live

Frank Ocean Seth Macfarlane John Mayer Odd Future Joseph Gordon-Levitt Muse Mumford And Sons Daniel Craig

Frank Ocean’s appearance on Saturday Night Live and the release of his new video for Pyramids made for a busy weekend, reports MTV News.

The critically acclaimed singer songwriter took the stage on Saturday Night Live for the premiere of its 38th season. Introduced by Family Guy creator, Seth McFarlane, the Odd Future member trilled out his high-pitch hit ‘Thinkin Bout You’ under a lone spotlight on a retro stage, with vintage arcade machines scattered in the background. The lights shifted to reveal co-star on the show, John Mayer on guitar, who managed to get a solo performance in when Ocean returned to the stage to perform his song Pyramids. It was a bite size version of the track, as the album version runs for nearly 10 minutes, but it was still an impressive performance. The background arcade machines were utilised when Frank left to twiddle his thumbs on the joysticks, whilst Mayer did some of his own thumb twiddling on the guitar. A video for Pyramids was also in the offing for Ocean’s busy weekend, and MTV described it as a “dark, druggy thing that doesn't provide any answers; instead, it only poses more questions about the mercurial star.”

Overall it was a successful return for SNL, which will welcome Joseph Gordon-Levitt to present the next episode on September 22nd, with Mumford And Sons, Daniel Craig and Muse next in line on October 6th.

John Mayer, Born and Raised Album Review

John Mayer's fifth studio album is very much a back to basics affair, full of nostalgia, introspection and dreamy melodies. It's also the album that Mayer needed to make at this point in his career. Following the often bitter observations of 2009's Battle Studies, some very public criticism following a couple of candid interviews, and medical issues that have prevented him touring so far in 2012, Mayer's new album is by no means a guaranteed success. But Born and Raised is ultimately satisfying because it feels in many ways as if he's wiping the slate clean.

As you'd expect from the cover art of the record (interestingly the first of his not to be a photo, nor feature Mayer himself) it's an homage to classic rock of the seventies with a country twist. He wears his influences on his sleeve too, name checking Neil Young on opener 'Queen of California' along with Joni Mitchell ("Joni wrote Blue in a house by the sea, I gotta believe there's another colour waitin' on me"). Musically the track shares some affinity to Rumours era Fleetwood Mac with laid back guitar and piano solos nestling among Mayer's warm vocals. It's nostalgic, but brimming with hope, showing an absence of the bittersweet blues that has overshadowed some of his previous work.
