The musician and his collaborator John Legend claimed the prestigious prize at last month's (Feb15) ceremony for their work on Selma theme tune Glory, but audience members and viewers were temporarily confused about who actually won as presenters read out the two stars' real names, Lonnie Lynn and John Stephens.

The hip-hop star admits he was initially taken aback too, revealing, "I was definitely surprised. I was like, 'OK, we know who it is', but the audience, they were like, looking around like, 'Who is that...?'"

However, Common was thrilled to hear his birth name mentioned at Hollywood's big night because it made him feel like his late father, who shares the same name, was there in spirit, cheering him on.

He explains, "To hear Lonnie Lynn, it meant something to me too because that's my father's name and he passed in September, so it resonated with me when they said Lonnie Lynn. He was right there (in spirit)."
