John Boyega And Will Poulter Bonded In Detroit

John Boyega Will Poulter Kathryn Bigelow

Boyega (The Force Awakens) plays Melvin Dismukes, a quietly observant security officer, while Poulter (The Revenant) plays Philip Krauss, an abusive policeman. As non-American actors, they're able to get under the skin of these characters without any cultural baggage. And despite the fact that they are playing characters on opposite sides of the conflict, the actors bonded on the set.

Boyega says he heard about the film when the auditions came up, and he had time to fit one movie in before resuming his Star Wars role for The Last Jedi. "I wanted a movie that was grounded and based on a true story," he says. "And this was an issue that I'm very passionate about, given the subject matter. I see the movie as Detroit's origin story: the scars and the hurt. This place was victimised by systemic racism and violence. And that creates an imbalance that's very, very hard to sort out."

John Boyega Says Carrie Fisher Gets An "Amazing Send-Off" In 'The Last Jedi'

Carrie Fisher John Boyega Star Wars

Carrie Fisher’s iconic Princess Leia is to be given an “amazing send-off” in the character’s final Star Wars film The Last Jedi, according to co-star John Boyega.

The young London-born actor, who plays Finn, revealed to American broadcaster ABC in a new interview this week that he shares “many scenes” with Fisher in the upcoming eighth instalment of the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi, and that the franchise “keeps her alive”.

Fisher died suddenly in December 2016 at the age of 60, and her final big-screen performance will come in The Last Jedi when it is released in cinemas at the end of this year. She had already completed filming her role in the movie at the time of her death, meaning no digital trickery has had to be used, but Leia will have no part in the ninth and final film set for 2019, and Boyega was asked about her final appearances and how the production team had treated it.

One of those returning actors is John Boyega, who plays First Order sodlier Finn. Though he was injured by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) during a vicious lightsaber jab to the back, he's still very much alive and recuperating from that wound in a Bacta tank. Unconscious for now, Boyega's character could have some big things ahead, despite currently making a name for himself for all the wrong reasons.

A Star Wars Episode 7 plot leak, from the usually reliable Badass Digest, has thrown the Universe into disarray this weekend. Where Are The Women In "Star Wars: Episode VII"? Here They Are - The Most Wanted In The Business

Lupita Nyong'o Gwendoline Christie John Boyega Daisy Ridley Adam Driver Andy Serkis Oscar Isaac

Good news for Star Wars fans, Lupita fans and just people who enjoy good things in general – Lupita Nyong’o has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. Kudos to whoever is making the casting decisions there, by the way. After the original casting was criticised for basically populating the film with all white men, hiring the most promising young Oscar winner of 2014 is probably the best way to recover.

And in other “awesome ladies, who we’d love to see kick all the tail in Star Wars,” Gwendolyn Christie, aka Game of Thrones’ Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in Episode VII. Sidenote: if you’re not a fan of Christie/Brienne, we’re not saying you’re wrong, but you definitely aren’t right.

Good

By trying to include an entire acclaimed novel on-screen, first-time filmmaker Biyi Bandele waters down momentous real-life events. The film is fascinating enough to hold our attention as it traces the first decade of Nigeria's independence, but the human drama at the centre never feels like much more than a soap opera.

The story starts in 1960 Lagos, as Nigeria proudly declares independence and looks to a bright future as Africa's largest, most prosperous nation. At the centre are twin sisters educated in America and Britain: Olanna (Thandie Newton) decides against working in the government, travelling north to teach at university; Kainene (Anika Noni Rose) moves east to manage their father's business. But it's their love lives that define them. Olanna falls for colleague Odenigbo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), whose Mama (Onyeka Onwenu) treats her as if she's a witch. Meanwhile, Kainene has a passionate affair with married Englishman Richard (Joseph Mawle). And both of their relationship struggles are echoed in Nigeria's violent birth pangs.

The film is punctuated with newsreel footage from the period, which adds to the authentic production design. The 1960s are recreated on-screen with an attention to detail from the bustling village streets to the stylish Mad Men-like sophistication of upper-class sitting rooms. Indeed, the focus is on the contrast between locals caught in ethnic and religious traditions and the foreign-educated progressive thinkers. So it's no wonder that the country experiences a series of violent coups, ethnic cleansing and a hideous civil war.
