"I'm thrilled to be hosting The ESPYS. Just ecstatic," McHale said when he made the announcement.

McHale further joked about taking part in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, something he had referred to on social media.

"After my stunning victory in the Iditarod this year by only using six Bichon Frises and a lamb, I think the sports world saw me as the logical host," 43-year-old McHale added.

In addition to dog racing, McHale is a lover of other sports including American football and rowing. This was echoed by representatives of the ESPYS in their statements made shortly after McHale's announcement.

"Joel is an extremely talented performer, a unique voice and a huge sports fan," said Connor Schell, the overseer of The ESPYS, as E! reports. "His experience as a comedian and love of sports make Joel the perfect host for The ESPYS inaugural broadcast on ABC."

Previous hosts of The ESPYS include rapper Drake, Mad Men actor Jon Hamm, comedian and talk show host Seth Meyers, Samuel L. Jackson and singer Justin Timberlake.

The award ceremony will be held on Wednesday 15th July at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on ABC July 15 at 8 p.m. ET.
