The series will follow the young Sheldon Cooper growing up in Texas.
CBS has given a straight-to-series order for 'The Big Bang Theory' spinoff 'Young Sheldon' for the network’s 2017-2018 season.
According to Deadline, the first episode of the series will be helmed by Jungle Book director Jon Favreau, while Jim Parsons, who had the original idea for the show, will serve as narrator.
'Young Sheldon' has been given a straight-to-series order by CBS
Deadline reports that the series will be ‘in the vein of ‘Malcolm in the Middle’’ and follows a nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper living with his family in East Texas and going to high school.
Iain Armitage has been cast as Sheldon, with Lance Barber playing Sheldon’s father, Raegan Revord and Montana Jordan playing his siblings and Zoe Perry as Sheldon’s mom.
Executive producing will be Parsons alongside ‘Big Bang Theory’ co-creator Chuck Lorre, showrunner Steven Molaro, and Todd Spiewak.
Previously CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves had said that the show will likely air behind 'The Big Bang Theory' next season.
Back in January, Parsons spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the spinoff, saying the idea to do a series based on Sheldon’s formative years was an opportunity too good to pass up.
"The writers have done, from the beginning, such a good job of building such a history and a layered nature to all these characters," he said.
"It just seems like a really wasted opportunity if you don't decide to explore the origin story with that.
“I mean, they've layered so many things in there over the past decade that is already there to be drawn from. I'm really excited about it. I think it will be very different than Big Bang, but in a good way.”
