The disgraced former ‘Top Gear’ presenter Jeremy Clarkson may be about to make a sensational return to BBC screens later this month as a guest presenter of ‘Have I Got News For You’.

British newspaper The Mirror reports that BBC chiefs have eventually decided to allow Clarkson to be the guest host on the April 24th episode, less than a month after the decision was taken to sack him from the motoring show. A spokeswoman for the corporation stated: “Jeremy’s contract has not been renewed on ‘Top Gear’ but he isn’t banned from appearing on the BBC.”

This move was originally mooted in a report by the same newspaper a couple of weeks ago on March 17th, before the panel investigating the fracas had even made its report. The booking had apparently been arranged before the scuffle involving ‘Top Gear’ producer Oisin Tymon.

It will be the first time the presenter has appeared on British TV since the final broadcasted ‘Top Gear’ episode on March 8th. As the former permanent ‘HIGNFY’ host Angus Deayton found out more than a decade ago, the two team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton can be pretty savage in their humour if there’s a disgraced celebrity in the presenter’s chair.

Clarkson is currently fulfilling contractual obligations to perform live shows with his former ‘Top Gear’ colleagues Richard Hammond and James May. The name of the tour has been changed to ‘Clarkson, Hammond & May Live’, and the three are forbidden from making reference to the incident or to the BBC.

In other news, North Yorkshire Police announced on Tuesday that they would not be pressing any criminal charges against Clarkson following the incident that saw him sacked. In the aftermath of the BBC’s report that cost him his job, the constabulary had requested a copy of it in order to ascertain whether it gave rise to any such charges.

Tymon himself has expressed regret and sorrow at the incident, and has refused to press any charges against his former boss. Having interviewed witnesses who were present at the hotel at which the fracas took place, they have satisfied themselves that no further action needs to be taken.
