He may have achieved total mastery of the pop world, but Ed Sheeran demonstrated this week that his skills on the road leave quite a lot to be desired. According to BBC's Newsbeat, the star crashed ‘Top Gear’’s ‘Reasonably Priced Car’ during filming of a regular segment of the popular show, whose new episode is due to be broadcast this weekend.

The singer, whose second album X was the biggest-seller of 2014 in the UK, does not hold a driving license and had apparently never driven a car before, so it’s hardly surprising that the red Vauxhall Astra left the track and entered the grass on a number of occasions.

Before filming at the show’s private circuit at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, Sheeran had tweeted “I’m driving for the first time ever today, on a race track, on tv. Wish me luck.” Kiefer Sutherland and Will Smith will also be celebrity guests on the new series of six episodes.

Sheeran isn’t the first celebrity guest to take the challenge without a driving license. British comedians Johnny Vegas and Jack Whitehall have both completed the circuit, and both without crashing the car! The in-house driving instructor and race expert ‘The Stig’ will have given Sheeran some pointers beforehand, but each guest must post their time while driving solo.

The 22nd series of the rebooted ‘Top Gear’ is due to go out on Sunday on BBC2 at 8pm, and will be simultaneously broadcast in fifty countries around the world.

Following the controversy over the recent Argentina special, in which the production team was chased out of the country by irate Falklands veterans, producer Andy Wilman last week suggested that there may not be another series following this one.
