Jeremy Clarkson could be returning to screens alongside his former ‘Top Gear’ pals Richard Hammond and James May. The trio are reported to be in talks with Netflix to launch a new car-based show in the wake of Clarkson’s exile from the BBC.

According to the Daily Mirror, one name being considered for the revamped show is ‘House of Cars’, an explicit and cheeky reference to the success of Kevin Spacey’s original political drama ‘House of Cards’ which found a home on the streaming service. An insider told the British paper “If it goes ahead, they're planning to call it ‘House of Cars’, which is just genius.”

It’s also a signal that Hammond, Clarkson and May are a combination that’s still very highly valued by potential suitors, and that a competition appears to be hotting up to capture their signatures, along with that of producer Andy Wilman, who also quit the show last month. The trio were spotted last week in a meeting with ITV’s Director of Television, Peter Fincham.

Whatever new show emerges, it will not be allowed to use the name ‘Top Gear’ as BBC2 is planning a re-launch of the program with an entirely new set of presenters. May and Hammond were reportedly not interested in staying with the corporation with a new presenter.

“Me and Hammond with a surrogate Jeremy is a non-starter, it just wouldn’t work. That would be lame, or ‘awks’ as young people say,” May was quoted as saying last month. Among the names mooted for the role of lead presenter have been Philip Glenister, Chris Evans, Jodie Kidd and Sue Perkins.

Meanwhile, the trio are preparing to kick off a large tour of their live show, fully stripped of any ‘Top Gear’ branding and going under the name ‘Clarkson, Hammond and May Live’. Teaser clips have been doing the rounds that show the trio getting up to most of their usual tricks – one-line banter, dropping things on cars and vice versa.

‘Clarkson, Hammond and May Live’ kicks off at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on May 22.
