The Wanted's Jay McGuiness and Zendaya have been named the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities by PETA2.

The boy band hunk and 'Shake It Up' star were awarded the titles after thousands of teens voted on peta2.com - which is the website of PETA US' youth division - to choose this year's recipients of the annual male and female honour.

Jay - who has been an animal lover since he was a small boy and owns a pet lizard called Neytiri - beat a host of other meat-free stars including Fall Out Boy's Andy Hurley, Jared Leto and Russell Brand, while Zendaya snagged her title over Anne Hathaway, Alicia Silverstone, Daniella Monet and Rocsi Diaz.

Zendaya's character Rocky Blue in the Disney series is a vegetarian, but this character development only happened because of the 16-year-old star's real-life beliefs.

She said: ''In the meatball episode, which was really gross, I put in a part where I said I was vegetarian because I really am a vegetarian in real life. That's something I believe in very strongly. We decided to make Rocky a vegetarian as well.''

Previous winners of PETA2's Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity contest include Christofer Drew and Olivia Wilde.

Kristen Bell and her fiancé Dax Shepard were named the World's Sexiest Vegetarians by PETA US - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - but Dax had to refuse the honour because he eats chicken.
