Jay Leno

It has only been a matter of days since David Letterman announced that he will retire once his current contract with CBS expires.

The longtime 'Late Show' host confirmed that he will be walking away from his late night talk-show gig on last Thursday's episode (April 3rd).

And now Letterman's onetime rival, Jay Leno, has weighed in on what he thinks of the 66 year-olds departure.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman: The world lost a true talent when actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment last Sunday after a suspected heroin overdose, aged 46. Thougha autopsy results were ruled inconclusive, drugs paraphernalia was found littered all over his house after the Oscar-winning actor suffered a relapse to substance abuse despite having been clean for more than 20 years.

The father-of-three's break-up with his partner Mimi O'Donnell is said to have caused the Capote star to turn to drugs and not the confusion over his sexuality, as was falsely alleged by the National Enquirer. Since the death, four suspected drug dealers have been arrested and are being questioned with regards to selling Hoffman, who was found with a syringe in his arm, a bad batch. Sadly, we have lost one of the only actors working today whose acting prowess meant we'd instinctively trust any film with his name. Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014).

Miley Cyrus has waded in to the recent Justin Bieber debate, offering her own words of wisdom to the troubled star in an interview with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. Jerry Seinfeld Grabs Coffee, With Comedians, For Online Talk Show

Jerry Seinfeld Louis C.K. Patton Oswald Howard Stern Tina Fey Todd Barry Jay Leno

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee might sound like the name of a not-very-exciting viral video, but it is in fact Jerry Seinfeld’s own talk show. It is coincidentally a web series, which does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s an hour of Seinfeld and a fellow comedian riding around, drinking coffee and being (hopefully) very entertaining. The format was inspired by an episode of his infamous 90s sitcom. In the episode in question, Jerry’s pal George decided success might await him if he lived his failed life in the opposite manner.

Seinfeld wanted to put a new spin on the classic talk show format.

“That,” recalls Seinfeld in a recent interview, “gave me the idea to create a talk show that was the opposite of the typical show. “With a typical talk show,” he explains via the Sun Times, “you have to go to a studio. You have to tell them in advance what you’re going to talk about. You have to dress up. You have to put on makeup. It’s very, very organized.

Just in case you had forgotten – we hadn’t – Jimmy Kimmel is set to take over The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from February 17. Fallon is excited to take over the Tonight Show from longtime host Leno.

It was announced earlier this year, that after many shifts at NBC, Leno would be replaced by Fallon and The Tonight Show will return to his original home in NYC. Before Fallon leaves his current home at Late Night, however, he will bow out one last time, with a special episode of the show, commemorating his run. A special, entitled “Best of Late Show with Jimmy Fallon” is set to air early in 2014. Fallon will then be replaced with Saturday Night Live alumn Seth Meyers, because NBC likes to keep it in the family apparently. Fallon even talked to the NY Daily News about some possible improvements that’ll be brought to the Tonight Show after his takeover.

Quentin Tarantino Working On A New Western, But Don't Worry, It Won't Be 'Django 2'

Good news Quentin Tarantino fans, QT is already working on his next picture, and like his last movie the filmmaker is heading to the Old West to tell his next story. The acclaimed filmmaker appeared on The Tonight Show and was chatting about the book-version of his 2012 film Django Unchained, at which point he began discussing his next move with host Jay Leno.

For those of you fretting over the possibility that Tarantino might have finally bowed to studio pressure and made a sequel to one of his films, the director quickly assured his fans that he is not working on Django Unchained 2. Rather than produce a follow-up to Django, the director said that working on that film opened his eyes to the Western genre, a genre he had always admired but never worked on. Now he has been bitten by the Western bug and wants to carry on with what he started with Django.

From Much-Maligned President To Artist, Introducing George W. Bush

Jay Leno George W Bush

To be fair to ol’ George Bush, there aren’t any Presidents that aren’t maligned, but his was a special breed of maligned; every ridiculous sentence that came out of his mouth contained something worth satirizing, assuming he hadn’t managed to do it himself.

And now that he’s out of office, the 67-year-old has decided that painting is the best thing for him to do. He actually took up the hobby soon after he left office, and even hired a teacher to help him hone his craft. "There's a Rembrandt trapped in this body. Your job is to find it,” he told his teacher, Bush revealed while talking to Jay Leno.

Bush shared a painting of his dog Barney and a stray cat that he adopted called Bob, but it was a portrait of Jay Leno that really stole the show. "I can't make fun of him now,” announced the veteran talk show host after seeing his already ridiculous face in an even more absurd format.

Jimmy Fallon Reveals Newborn Daughter's Name: Welcome Winnie Rose!

Jimmy Fallon Nancy Juvonen Jay Leno Seth Meyers

It was the moment Jimmy Fallon's fans had been waiting for: after his wife screenwriter Nancy Juvonen gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Tuesday (23rd July), devotees to his Late Night TV show clamoured to learn the name of the little one almost as much as the world were rabid for details on the royal baby who was born a day earlier...almost.

Last night, the 38-year-old comedian opened his show with a special monologue setting the record straight about his newfound fatherhood: "I'm your host 'dada.' I'm the father of a beautiful baby girl, she's so cute. Her name is Winnie Rose Fallon and she's so cute...she's five pounds nine ounces" gushed the presenter to shrieks of excitement from his audience. It was inevitable that amidst the recent media storm, the royal baby would be mentioned in relation to the timing of Winnie Rose's birth: "Yes William and Kate, we'll definitely set up a play date, stop bothering me. Yes, everyone's still talking about the other baby."

Meet John Oliver, Jon Stewart's Replacement As Daily Show Host

John Oliver Jon Stewart David Letterman Jay Leno

John Oliver? No? Never heard of him? Well, the British comedian is about to replace Jon Stewart as host of the Daily Show, just for the summer of course. Recommended to Stewart by Ricky Gervais, the dark-haired, bespectacled, self-deprecating Oliver has a popular podcast following, though the Daily Show is his biggest gig to date. Obviously.

The comedian was taping a stand-up set for the fourth season of his Comedy Central series John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show at the Webster Hall on Tuesday night (June 4, 2013) when he was asked by an audience member if he was excited to fill the boots of Stewart, "The only thing I'm nervous about is talking to guests like human beings, because all of my interviews so far have been attacking people," Oliver says. "I have a genuine concern about sitting across from an actor whose movies I obviously haven't seen."

On a recent interview with one of the hottest movie stars of the moment, Oliver explained, "Two nights ago, I had a nightmare I was interviewing Jaden Smith. I said, 'Look, Jaden, I haven't seen "After Earth" but the trailers look awful,' and behind him, I could see Will Smith doing this [raises a fist]. I don't know why in my head that's how Will Smith expresses anger, like a 1920s journalist."

Matt Lauer Tells Leno, "I'm Not A Guy Who Complains" - REALLY?

Matt Lauer Ann Curry Jay Leno

Matt Lauer opened up about his frankly horrendous year on television during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday (May 2, 2012). Many viewers perceive Lauer to be the sole reason why former Today show host Ann Curry was replaced on the show, which fell behind ABC rival Good Morning America in the ratings for the first time in years.

"It's been an interesting year - no question about it," Lauer told Leno when asked how he was doing. "I'm not a guy who complains. I love this job, I really do." Lauer - who is reportedly paid $25 million a year - was said to have been "100 per cent" behind the decision to axe Ann, according to sources who spoke with Us Weekly. In an excerpt from Brian Stelter's new book on morning television, it is suggested that the plot to get rid of Curry was titled "Operation Bambi," with one production assistant apparently overhearing Lauer say, "I can't believe I am sitting next to this woman," while on set.

Leno avoided going into detail about the Ann Curry saga, though was asked about a full page ad taken out by Kathie Lee Gifford this week, defending Lauer. "Kathie Lee did something very sweet a couple of weeks ago," he said. "She went around and she just passed around a note and had members of the staff sign it just saying, 'Things are going to be okay."

Brad Paisley Talks ‘Accidental Racist’ On Jay Leno: "Something Good Can Come Of This"

Brad Paisley Jay Leno LL Cool J

It’s been a week of explaining for Brad Paisly, whose ‘Accidental Racist’ song has, accidently (sweet irony noted) caused loads of controversy. Most recently, he’s been explaining to Jay Leno what it’s all about.

“What we're trying to do is explore what happens when two people have a dialogue," Paisley said. "The entire album Wheelhouse is meant to touch on some themes that I think aren't normally touched on in music, and in the context of the album, the song makes a little more sense." See, some people have a problem with the song’s content, other people are dismayed by just how bad it is, and others think his brand of country hip hop is just awful. And although he sees people have misinterpreted the song, he said he hopes that "something good can come of this,” adding” "We don't expect to get the answers in this song," Paisley said. "It's not perfect, but it is honest, and it comes from a good place." It would appears as though last year’s Oscars winners were the influence for this song. "Racism has been on my mind," he says. "Last year, we had some really powerful movies deal with it really well. We had Django [Unchained] and Lincoln, and the media deals with it all the time, and I thought maybe it would be an interesting conversation between country music and rap music to deal with this subject between two individuals in a loving and understanding way."

Jimmy Fallon Unfazed By New Job Prospects At The Tonight Show

Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno

Jimmy Fallon appeared unfazed by his impending job change, as he was observed during a rehearsal for his current late night show. As he ran through a comic version of The Lumineers’ ‘Ho Hey,’ along with Blake Shelton and Nick Offerman, he displayed exactly why he’s a fitting choice when it comes to filling the shoes left by veteran comic and presenter Jay Leno.

The switchover won’t happen until 2014 but such is the profile and influence of The Tonight Show, tongues are already wagging regarding Fallon’s suitability for the job. Los Angeles Times are fully paid up members of the Fallon camp, it seems and a recent article waxes lyrical about Fallon’s comic versatility. At just under 40 years old, he’s got the social relevance to boost the role, where Leno’s tired old comedy is starting to fray around the edges.

“[Fallon] does something that's become increasingly difficult in this tabloid-obsessed era,” writes Meredith Blake. “He gets celebrities to let down their guard with pleasantly wacky parlor games with such self-explanatory names as Egg Russian Roulette or Rock, Paper, Scissors, Pie. They provide easy laughs while also getting stars to go beyond the usual canned publicity spiel.” They also note that his mimicking skills make him “broadly accessible and well-primed to younger viewers who crave mash-ups and memes.”

Kim Kardashian Goes On Leno, Reveals Possible Baby Names

Kim Kardashian Kanye West Jay Leno

Kim Kardashian talked about her unborn baby on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, hinting at some possible baby names, but skillfully evading the question of Baby West Kardashian's sex.

"We have a list and some of them are 'K names' and some of them aren't," the girlfriend of Kanye West coyly said when asked by the host if she would follow the family's tradition to pick a "K" name for the baby, if it's a girl. And no, the little one will not be named North West, though that would have been hilarious... ly awesome. The eldest Kardashian sister debunked the rumor that’s been going around social media lately. She did express her preference for one name in particular though.

"You know what name I do like but it probably won't be on? I like Easton. Easton West? I think that's cute.”

Jay Leno's Rating Jokes Just Keep On Coming

Jay Leno Jimmy Fallon

Jay Leno is back in full force, by which we of course mean he’s making a lot of bad jokes about ratings in his opening monologue.

There’s something extremely bizarre about the Tonight show host’s feud with NBC. Namely, isn’t he supposed to be protecting his job? With the rumors about the show moving to New York and Jimmy Fallon being groomed for Leno’s seat, it just doesn’t make sense for the NBC vet to be hurling quip after, frankly, not that funny quip at network big shots. Maybe that’s not the entire reason the Tonight show host laid off the ratings jokes.

Before the initial suggestion that Fallon was being groomed for Leno’s job, there was that one report by Carter, which claimed that he and network chief Robert Greenblatt were exchanging emails about how Leno needed to cool it with the ratings jokes – a sentiment we would agree on, since they’re not exactly Leno’s funniest fare. And well, if that’s true, the warning worked for a grand total of a week.

Meyers, Fallon, Leno - The NBC Chain Of Events Keeps Going

Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno Seth Meyers

As rumours of Jimmy Fallon succeeding Jay Leno for NBC’s late night slot are pretty much solid at this point, another name has been added to the roster – that of Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers.

Since Fallon will almost certainly be moving to the Tonight Show from 2014 onwards, somebody has to take his spot on The Late Show and, according to NBC insiders, that somebody might just be Meyers. Fallon has been groomed by the network to replace Tonight Show veteran Leno for some time now, reportedly because NBC are desperate to appeal to a younger audience. The decision to boot Leno in particular, however, has had many industry insiders baffled, since the Tonight Show actually fills the only slot where NBC hasn’t been having trouble with ratings. While the network struggles to pull in audiences with their early morning and prime time programming, Leno has been performing consistently. Not only that – he is currently ahead of ABC’s Letterman and CBS’s Kimmel in ratings, according to USA Today.

Apparently though, NBC aren’t planning to stick to the old standard – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it - and are instead trying to prepare for the hypothetical future with hip programming to appeal to them young-uns. In any case, Fallon’s move hasn’t been confirmed by the network yet – aside from a vague hint here and there, but the rumours of Seth Meyers transfer add a whole new dimension to the entire deal. Perhaps the changes at NBC are at a larger scale than we’ve expected.

Halle Berry Dress On Leno Leaves Tongues Wagging, Especially Jay's!

Halle Berry Jay Leno

Halle Berry's appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno last night wont be remembered for herencouraging promotion of new film The Call, nor will it be remembered for any of Leno's witticisms, no what people will remember Halle's appearance for will be the cleavage bearing, thigh-high dress worn by the Oscar-winning actress. Judging by Jay's reaction to the dress, we're guessing he'll be dreaming about Ms Berry and her ensemble for weeks on end (he's not the only one).

The 46-year-old ensured that all eyes were on her during her chat with the late night talk veteran, wearing a black and silver mini dress that showed off a helluva lot of clevage. Despite all his years of experience, Leno couldn't help himself but be drawn into Berry's breasts, with his glare clearly fixed on her exposed chest throughout most of the interview. Jay is clearly a fan of Halle’s figure-hugging dress-choice, as he complimented the star on the plunging Versace gown she wore to the 85th Annual Academy Awards last month, adding, “I like this dress better.” Something tells us he isn't the only one.

ABC To Move Jimmy Kimmel Live To Premium Time Slot

Jimmy Kimmel David Letterman Jay Leno

A battle of the giants is approaching – networks, hosts and late-night shows will be fighting it out for ratings this January, as the Jimmy Kimmel Live show on ABC moves to a later time slot.

The switch to 11.35 might not seem like a big deal to most – after all it’s only 25 minutes later than Kimmel’s original slot, but it’s a move long prepped for by ABC and long dreaded by rival networks NBC and CBS. The new time slot puts Kimmel in direct competition for ratings with household names Jay Leno and David Letterman and this means a lot to the JKL host.

“I know moving from midnight to 11:35 might not sound like a big deal — it’s only 25 minutes — but it’s probably the most important 25 minutes of my life, since the first 14 times I had sex,” Kimmel told his audience in August, on the day ABC announced the change. The network has been grooming Kimmel for the promotion throughout last year, and it’ll be very interesting to see where the show goes from here. Meanwhile, Jay and David have reacted in very different ways to the news. While Letterman has given his blessing to the new competitor, Leno will be moving his show ahead by one minute, starting at 11.34. A whole minute ahead of the new rival. Somehow, we feel that that might not cut it in the fight for ratings.

Jimmy Kimmel Lays Into Jay Leno... Again

Jimmy Kimmel Jay Leno David Letterman

First there was Biggie and 2 Pac, then Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey, now it's Jimmy Kimmel v Jay Leno in the battle or celebrity feuds that people are gradually learning not to care about.

"As a comedian, you can't not have disdain for what he's done: He totally sold out," Kimmel tells Rolling Stone. "He was a master chef who opened a Burger King." Kimmel will now be competing with David Letterman for viewers in his new time slot, but has only respect for that particular elder. "If I beat David Letterman in the ratings, does that mean I'm better than Letterman?" Kimmel asks aloud. "No f--ing way." Jimmy has some odd opinions on Leno; opinions which seem to collide. He said: "Jay Leno is not going to be able to stay on television forever, and obviously Jimmy Fallon is the heir apparent. And [Fallon is] doing a great job, so it makes sense people would talk like this. That said, you can never count Jay out. He seems to pop up just when you think he's dead -- he comes alive and he's got a hatchet."

Letterman's views on Leno seem a little more reserved, and tongue in cheek, but then again, he is a veteran in the game. "He's an unusual fellow. I've never met anyone quite like Jay," Letterman said. "And I will say, and I'm happy to say, that I think he is the funniest guy I've ever known. Just flat out, if you go to see him do his nightclub act, just the funniest, the smartest, a wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic. Therefore, the fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known -- I could never reconcile that." (New York Daily News).

Did Kelsey Grammer's Love For Romney Get 'The Boss' Cancelled?

Kelsey Grammer Jay Leno

Kelsey Grammer has blamed his Republican political leanings for the cancellation of his acclaimed drama The Boss. The Starz TV network announced yesterday (November 20, 2012) that they would not be continuing the show, in which Kelsey plays the tyrannical Chicago mayor Tom Kane, The Daily Mail has reported.

This isn’t the first time that the former Frasier star has suggested that his support for the Republican party has held him back in the world of TV. Earlier this year, Kelsey was complaining to Jay Leno that his Republican ways were the reason that The Boss hadn’t been nominated for an Emmy. When Leno asked why the show had won a Golden Globe but hadn’t even been nominated for an Emmy, Kelsey replied “Yeah, its hard to figure. It may have to do with several things, honestly, but I think it’s possible, I mean, I am a, I’m a declared out of the closet Republican in Hollywood. Do I believe it’s possible that some young person, young voting actor, or even older voting member for the Emmys, would sit there and go, ‘Yeah, that’s a great performance, but oooooh, I just hate everything he stands for?’” He then answered his own question, with a degree of sarcasm, saying “I don’t believe that’s possible.”

In a statement, Starz said that it was “proud” of the show but had made the “difficult” decision not to continue with another series. Grammer may be citing his love for Romney as the reason behind the show’s cancellation but it’s worth looking at the viewer figures, too. The Boss raked in 659,000 for its premiere and a season peak of 440,000 viewers, Compared to the 1.25 million that Starz’s other major drama, Magic City attracted, it looks as though other factors may also be at play here.

Lindsay Lohan: Barbara Walters Booted In Favor Of Jay Leno For Interview

Barbara Walters Lindsay Lohan Jay Leno Whoopi Goldberg

It was widely publicised that Barbara Walters had an indepth 20/20 interview lined up with controversial celebrity Lindsay Lohan, in the run up to the release of Lifetime's Elizabeth Taylor biopic Liz & Dick, which stars Lohan. However, just a few days ago Lohan's new publicists cancelled on Walters on Li-Lo's behalf. THEN, they announced that she'd be interviewing with Jay Leno instead. The cheek!

Walters is not a happy bunny, an emotion that she aired on The View with Whoopi Goldberg on Monday (12th Nov. 2012). "If they had said to me, 'You know Barbara, she isn't up to the kinds of questions you might ask.' If they had told me that, I wouldn't feel quite as disappointed as I do today," Walters said.

Whoopi supported the octogenarian journalist, saying "You are a very different kind of interviewer." speculating the possibility that Lohan's publicists thought, "You know what, WE are not up for you to do with interview you will be doing with Barbara - you are going to do Jay and get your [movie promotion] obligation out of the way." With which Babs agreed, reports the Washington Post.

The Twilight Promotional Rounds Continue For Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart

Robert Pattinson Kristen Stewart Jay Leno Jimmy Kimmel

Everyone’s pretty excited about seeing Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart walking down the red carpet for the first time together again since their split (why, we’re not sure. We can’t imagine much happening other than polite smiles and nods to the cameras), but for now they’re still doing the Twilight promotional jaunt separate, with both recently clocking a couple of high profile appearances.

E! Online reports that the pair hit up competing networks, with Stewart visiting The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Pattinson heading over to Jimmy Kimmel Live. The appearances on the two biggest talk shows on Monday night television in the US are proof that things are really hotting up ahead of the film’s release on November 16.

So did we garner any new information about the film ahead of its release? Not really, both actors were asked about Halloween costumes, the upcoming US election and, in Pattinson’s case, his penchant for loud kissing. Not really much to get your teeth into there, Twilight fans. On his loud kissing, Pattinson quipped on being shown a few clips of Breaking Dawn Part 2: "I just noticed, this is a very clear example of it...every single scene I end up kissing someone...I have extraordinarily loud little pecks. It sounds like I'm walking around in Wellies...I don't understand, my lip is literally like a vacuum." Witty. Stewart meanwhile cracked "I clearly am not recognized in this paparazzi photo," when asked by Leno about donning a freaky mask for Halloween.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Taylor Lautner Confirms Change Of Ending

Taylor Lautner Jay Leno Robert Pattinson

Taylor Lautner has confirmed that there will be a slight change in the ending of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Speaking to chat show host Jay Leno, Lautner revealed that the movie doesn’t follow Stephenie Meyer’s book down to the letter but he won’t tell exactly how the movie differs from the original novel.

Prompted by Jay Leno, who asked “But there's a twist, because the ending - I don't wanna give anything away - is a little different from maybe, what was in the book,” Taylor says “You know," Taylor (who plays Jacob Black in the movies) replied, "there's a very thin line because the fans would freak on us if we changed anything too much. I can confirm there is a twist and I can confirm everybody can find out what it is on 16 November.” Lautner’s Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson has already given his own take on the new ending, saying that it is “bizarre.” Now, if that’s not enough to get Twilight fans itching for the movie to hit the theaters, we don’t know what is.

Twilight fever is now slowly taking over the world, with the movie’s stars having been dispatched to the four corners of the globe to promote the last instalment in the franchise, at various different premieres and press junkets. Expect more little teasers like this one. If you’re a fan, you’ll probably be close to collapsing with nervous exhaustion by the time the movie’s released.

Donald Trump Obama 'October Surprise': What Do The Celebs Think?

A special Donald Trump announcement, which saw him promise to donate $5 million to Obama's favourite charity if the president released his college records and passport information, has been met by a less than favourable response from a few choice celebrities.

In a rare moment of genuine wit, which would probably be better applied to some of his music, Adam Levine of Maroon 5 tweeted: "Will someone tell Donald Trump we don't live in Gotham City?" And it was the micro blogging site that proved to be a breeding ground for comic responses to the frankly bizarre request from Trump; ‘The Office’ star Rainn Wilson posted, "I will pay 5 million dollars to see copies of Donald Trump's humility," while her show’s creator, Ricky Gervais tweeted, "I will give $500 to charity if Donald Trump gives up his hairdresser's passport and college records." Singer Josh Groban tweeted, "For Halloween I'm going to be Donald Trump! Gonna comb over my hair and not give 5 million dollars to charity!"

Perhaps the most important commentator on Mr. Trump is Obama himself, who of course was the subject of the odd YouTube upload. "What's this thing with Trump and you?" Leno asked on The Tonight Show, reports The L.A Times. "This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama responded. "We had constant run-ins on the soccer field. He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over." We at Contact Music will give $5 to our chosen charity if Donald Trump ever says anything sensible. And that’s a promise.

Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Get Matching Tattoos

Miley Cyrus Liam Hemsworth Jay Leno

With rumours circulating that the two were no longer an item for some time now, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have hit back at the doubters in a most committed fashion: by getting matching tattoos. Miley Cyrus' tattoo collection has now grown into double figures.

The pair, still very much an item, got inked with a quote from former US President Theodore Roosevelt, with Hemsworth showing off the new tats with a photo posted onto his Instagram. The photo shows the newly inked segments of both of their arms, with Hemsworth's fiancé's arm starting the quote, and his tattoo finishing it.

The finished article reads, with Miley starting: "so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." With Hemsworth's ink finishing off the quote with: "if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly."

First Daughter Review

Zero

Set in an absurd, patronizing fantasy world in which flag-waving citizens line the streets to see the president's kid off to college and angry political protesters share the red-carpet sidelines at black-tie events with shallow reporters asking stupid questions, "First Daughter" could well be the most hackneyed and insipid movie of 2004.

Failing to achieve even the shrug-worth mediocrity of January's similarly plotted "Chasing Liberty" (with Mandy Moore), this gimmick-driven disaster drags star Katie Holmes down with it as Samantha Mackenzie, the sheltered, personality-free offspring of a controversial commander-in-chief (an unconvincing, completely vanilla Michael Keaton), who falls in love with a cute Secret Service agent (an even blander Marc Blucas) posing as a student in her dorm.

Although introduced in the manner of a fairytale, the film's rampant lack of authenticity is simply insurmountable. Samantha's bodyguards constantly hover three feet behind her -- even in class and while she's alone in the dorm's TV room. The girl is never once shown doing anything that even remotely resembles studying, yet as she's egged on by a soundtrack of flutes and twinkling triangles, she proclaims her determination to have a normal coed experience. In pursuit of it, she sneaks out on dates with that charming classmate she doesn't know is an undercover agent -- that is until he blows his secret identity by rescuing her during one of many security breaches so impossibly contrived that the Secret Service should sue 20th Century Fox for defamation of character.
