'Spring Breakers', the 2013 Harmony Korine-directed flick, has been granted a sequel.

A follow-up to the provocative and mesmerizing film, titled 'Spring Breakers: The Second Coming,' is now under development by the Paris-based production company Wild Bunch, according to Screen Daily.

A screenplay for the sequel has already been written by Irvine Welsh ('Trainspotting').

However one of the major changes Wild Bunch will be making is the director, the controversial Korine will not be returning to the project and to replace him is the relatively unknown Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund, who is credited for Lady Gaga's music videos 'Paparazzi' and 'Telephone.'

The original 'Spring Breakers', which was made on a $5 million budget, boosted an ensemble cast that included James Franco, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, and earned $31.7 million at the worldwide box office.

The plot follows four female college students who hold up a restaurant to acquire money for spring break, but their wild vacation quickly comes to an end when they all get arrested, until a local drug dealer (Franco) bails them out and shows them how to have a good time while risking everything.

Wild Bunch's new version, which the company will aim to sell at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, follows a group of spring breakers going head to head with an "extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them."

"It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," said Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval, noting that it will feature new and old cast members.

At this time no casting decisions on who will be returning have been announced.
