Third Person Review

Good

There are moments when this three-strand drama almost ascends to the emotional resonance of writer-director Paul Haggis' Oscar-winning 2004 movie Crash. Perhaps even more ambitious, this film is exploring issues of creativity, attraction and grief, but Haggis puts so much effort into the literary trickery that he fails to create characters the audience can connect with. So the drama ends up being interesting but never moving.

The central plot-thread is in Paris, where blocked writer Michael (Liam Neeson) is holed up in a hotel after leaving his wife (Kim Basinger) and arranging to meet his whip-smart mistress Anna (Olivia Wilde). But their witty romance seems to get entangled with his struggle to write a new novel. Meanwhile in Rome, dodgy American businessman Scott (Adrien Brody) meets Monika (Moran Atias), a sexy Roma woman trying to rescue her kidnapped daughter from local gangsters. With his own haunting back-story involving a lost child, Scott offers to help. And in New York, fallen soap-star Julia (Mila Kunis) has hired a lawyer (Maria Bello) in an effort to get custody of her son from her wealthy-painter ex (James Franco). But her life has gone so far off the rails that it's unlikely any judge will see things her way.

There's a clear sense that these storylines are swirling around in Michael's head as he tries to write. Each character has parent-child issues, including the event that sent Michael's career into a downward spiral. But Haggis never quite defines all of this, leaving ideas and themes dangling everywhere without connecting them to authentic people or experiences. So it's very difficult to get involved in any of the story strands, even though the actors deliver open, raw performances. Kunis has the film's strongest role, a complex journey into the aching soul of a mother, and she plays it beautifully. And Bello finds some moments of consuming emotion in her smaller part. Everything else feels rather cliched, from Neeson and Wilde's cute-prickly romantic games to Brody's journey to the dark side of Italy.

Gia Coppola's Palo Alto Is A Next-Generation Movie

Gia Coppola James Franco Emma Roberts Jack Kilmer

One of the more striking things about the new multi-strand teen drama Palo Alto is how it features a series of second and third-generation artists and rising stars. It's certainly a film that looks forwards, crafting a very different style of teen drama than anything we've seen before.

James Franco & Emma Roberts in Palo AltoJames Franco & Emma Roberts in Palo Alto

Intriguingly, the film most closely resembles writer-director Gia Coppola's Aunt Sofia's debut film The Virgin Suicides (1999), another evocative teen movie that centred on emotions rather than overt plot points. Gia is also of course the granddaughter of master filmmaker Francis (of The Godfather and Apocalyse Now fame). Her famous cousins include Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman, whose mother Talia Shire (best known as Adrian in Rocky) also appears in Palo Alto.

Palo Alto Review

Excellent

James Franco's collection of autobiographical short stories is adapted into a remarkably evocative film by Gia Coppola, granddaughter of Francis. And the film's next-generation credentials don't end there. It stars Emma Roberts (daughter of Eric) and Jack Kilmer (son of Val), superb young actors who bring their characters to vivid life even as multiple story strands weave around them. And what makes the film important is its willingness to present teens authentically, often in ways parents probably wish they didn't know about.

It's set in suburban Northern California, where high school teen April (Roberts) worries that she's the last virgin in her class. She's secretly in love with Teddy (Kilmer), and he likes her too, but everyone thinks he's having a fling with the class slut (Zoe Levin). So while babysitting one night for her soccer coach (Franco), she is both startled and thrilled when he makes a move on her. Meanwhile, Teddy's best pal Fred (Nat Wolff) is causing chaos everywhere he goes, as the school's teens go from party to party indulging in alcohol and drugs, testing the boundaries of authority. And their parents seem fairly oblivious to all of this.

Coppola shoots and edits the film in a way that's deeply personal, focussing on the inner lives of the characters rather than the gyrations of the various plot strands. This gives the film a surprisingly cohesive tone, linking everything together into a single tale of young people trying to work out a path to adulthood in a society full of mixed messages. And things rarely go as expected. For example, Teddy is sure he'll go to prison when he crashes his car while driving stoned, but he is given a second chance. And he discovers that doing community service is actually rather enjoyable.

Palo Alto Trailer

April (Emma Roberts) is a shy young girl attending high school in Palo Alto, California. While she has an unrequited crush on Teddy (Jack Kilmer), a flirtatious relationship with her soccer coach, Mr. B (James Franco) is steadily developing into something more physical and altogether more dangerous. At the same time, in the same town, a girl named Emily (Zoe Levin) is the polar opposite of April. Emily indulges in sexual interactions with Teddy and his friend Fred (Nat Wolff) who are themselves engaging in acts of juvenile destruction. But as the kids are forced together as their paths collide, questions arise about the nature of love, lust, boredom, and recklessness in the modern youth culture.

Lindsay Lohan was left feeling embarrassed when a list of all the famous people she had slept with, which included 36 high-profile stars, was leaked to the public back in March. But to make things worse, someone on that list claims the 28 year-old actress is a liar.

Lindsay Lohan

Zac Efron, Orlando Bloom, Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine, Heath Ledger, Benicio Del Toro, and Colin Farrell, are just some of the individuals Lohan has supposedly had sex with, but James Franco is the only person who has come forward to deny this allegation.

The Interview

Seth Rogen Vs. North Korea: Seth Rogen should be feeling a little nervous right now. The actor and funnyman, who is preparing for the fall release of new movie The Interview, has been threatened after North Korea issued an official complaint to the UN. The shady country raised its hackles over the plot of Rogen's new movie, which depicts a plot to kill dictator Kim Jong-Un. This is unbelievable. If you want to thumb your nose at the Supreme Leader, go giggle at the poster - it's hilarious.

George Clooney Vs. The Daily Mail: George Clooney should only have seating arrangements and wedding cake tasting on his mind at the moment but the Gravity actor has had to engage in battle with The Daily Mail over comments the tabloid made alleging that the mother of Clooney's fiancée, Amal Alamuddin, was not happy with her daughters upcoming nuptials on religious grounds - a claim the actor has called a "lie." Clooney got angry, the Mail apologised, Clooney got angrier.

Seth Rogen James Franco Lizzy Caplan Evan Goldberg

The first trailer for James Franco and Seth Rogen's new movie The Interview rolled out online on Wednesday night (June 11, 2014) giving fans their first look at the frankly bizarre comedy that sees a would-be interviewer and his producer buddy tasked with assassinating North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Rogen had tweeted out the stunning poster a couple of hours before.

Before he and his pal head out to the east, they are contacted by the CIA who want to capitalize on the opportunity to get close to the fearsome leader. James Franco Pens 'Fictional' Short Story About Rejecting Lindsay Lohan

James Franco

James Franco wanted to clear up any speculation that suggests he has slept with Lindsay Lohan. The 36 year-old star was one of the 36 names on a list the actress allegedly wrote, naming all the famous people she had slept with.

James Franco
Franco's short story recalled the time he didn't have sex with Lohan

But Franco doesn't seem to recall ever having sexual relations with Lohan, and he recently wrote a short story for Vice, titled Bungalow 89, about the time he rejected her offer when they both lived at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont.

James Franco Wrote A Short Story... And It Stars Lindsay Lohan

James Franco Lindsay Lohan

Besides starring in movies, producing movies, working for various diplomas and occasionally “chatting” with underage fans, James Franco apparently finds time for literary pursuits – like the short story he recently penned for Vice magazine. Franco’s work will be published in the fiction issue of Vice and centers on a character called “Lindsay Lohan”. Now there’s an unexpected plot twist.

James Franco
James Franco wrote a short story about Lindsay Lohan.

The story reads much less like fiction than actual recollections from Franco’s life, but we’ll never know. In it, Franco visits Lohan in the Chateau Marmont hotel (from where Lohan was once reportedly banned thanks to an unpaid bill). He reads her Salinger stories, listens to her ramble about her memories, and zones out on a giant Gucci billboard of himself outside. But he still plays with the idea of whether the entire encounter is made up, writing: "Do you think I've created this? This dragon girl, lion girl, Hollywood hellion, terror of Sunset Boulevard, minor in the clubs, Chateau Demon? Do you think this is me?"

James Franco Writes ‘Fictional’ Story About NOT Sleeping With A Girl Named Lindsay Lohan

James Franco Lindsay Lohan

When James Franco’s name appeared on Lindsay Lohan’s leaked ‘sex list’ one of the great sexual mysteries of our time began. Did James Franco actually sleep with Lindsay Lohan? We asked....if he didn't, why would she say he did? Then there was the more important question of, why are we even discussing this? Well apparently there’s still more to be discussed on this one as in the latest development, Franco has penned a fictional story about not sleeping with a girl named Lindsay Lohan, a story similar to the one he told Howard Stern (about not sleeping with a girl named Lindsay Lohan). Confusing? A little, yes, but just wait till you read said story, prepare for any love you had left for Franco to slowly evaporate.

James FrancoJames Franco: did not sleep with the real or fictional Lindsay Lohan, apparently

The story, entitled Bungalow 89, has been published in Vice’s fiction issue, so you can kind of guess what we might be in for. James Franco plus Vice sounds like it could be a recipe for try hard artsy junk. But when you add in a few spoonfuls of J.D. Salinger, you’ve got a yourself feast so rich in pretentiousness you’ll need a sick bag to make it through the first few paragraphs.

Emma Watson Joins The List Of Celebrity Graduates

Emma Watson John Legend James Franco Lupita Nyong'o

It’s no Hogwarts, but it just might be the next best thing. Actress Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the hit franchise Harry Potter, recently graduated from the Ivy League school Brown University for a degree in English literature. Enrolling in the school in 2009, the degree had been a work in progress as Watson took breaks in between to finish off the remaining Harry Potter films, and she even worked on her schooling abroad as she studied at Oxford University in England, as well. You’d think adapting to the college life could be difficult for someone with such a star status, but Watson said it was pretty easy adjusting. "I've never even been asked for an autograph on campus," she said in an interview in 2013. "I threw a party for nearly 100 students and not a single person put a photo on Facebook."

Watson joins the list of quite a few celebrities that have graduated from top tier schools, and it’s an admirable accomplishment whether it was done before they became famous, or after. In fact, there’s probably a ton of your favorite celebrities that you never even knew had a degree in some weird categories completely unrelated to their career choice. Either way, for these actors and musicians, they’ve proven that at one point or another, an A mark was once a more important accolade than an Oscar or a Grammy.

A war of words has been waging on social media between those who believe Kim Kardashian is the height of fashion and sophistication and those who feel her name should not be mentioned in the same sentence as such words. Since she appeared on the cover of US Vogue with fiancé Kanye West, a number of couples have stepped forward to show they can out do the loved up couple. She's one of the greatest stars of all time, yet she was still pipped to the cover of Vogue by none other than the reigning Queen of popular culture, Kim Kardashian. We can weep at the cruel injustice - everyone knows Miss Piggy and her beau are considerably more Vogue friendly than Kardashian and Kanye but alas it was not meant to be.

Veronica Mars Review

Very Good

Funded by fans, this follow-up to the cult TV show feels a lot like an extended reunion episode. But even those unfamiliar with the series will enjoy the twisty plot and smart dialog, plus the sparky Kristen Bell in the title role. And while there are rather too many characters for a stand-alone movie, they all feed nicely into the central mystery.

After escaping from the run-down seaside town of Neptune, California, nine years ago, Veronica (Bell) has become a New York lawyer. But just as she's on the verge of landing her first proper job, an old friend is murdered back home, waking her investigatory instincts. The worst of it is that her ex Logan (Dohring) is the prime suspect, so Veronica heads home to help him clear his name. Her private eye dad (Colantoni) just rolls his eyes when she slips back into her old mystery-solving role, working with her pals Mac, Weevil and Wallace (Majorino, Capra and Daggs). But three other classmates - Gia, Cobb and Dick (Ritter, Starr and Hansen) - are also involved. And the fact that she keeps putting off her return to New York annoys her boyfriend Piz (Lowell).

The most refreshing thing about this film is the way filmmaker Thomas refuses to play by the usual rules. Bell may have been offered a dream job, but we fully understand why she's blowing it off to help her friends. And the whodunit plot is just intriguing enough to hold our interest: we don't really care who the villain really is, but it's fun to watch Veronica dig through the clues and challenge every level of authority. And the script gleefully stirs in red herrings, side-plots and lots of suspicious-looking characters.

James Franco Is The Ideal Guy To Adapt The Making Of The Room

James Franco

It’s not a big budget adaptation of The Room – which would probably be a disaster considering the organic brilliance of the original - but James Franco is directing an adaption of The Disaster Artist, the book written by Greg Sestero about The Room, and so much more.

James FrancoJames Franco looks pretty happy with himself doesn't he?

Greg Sestero put the Mark in “great story Mark,” and subsequently penned this thoughts on the bizarre experience of living with Tommy Wiseau, the man responsible for creating the film so terrible it quickly became one of the most talked about of all time.

'Inside Llewyn Davis' Wins Big At US Critics Society Awards

Coen Brothers Joel Coen Ethan Coen Chiwetel Ejiofor Robert Redford Cate Blanchett James Franco Jennifer Lawrence

Inside Llewyn Davis took home the top honour at the National Society of Film Critics Awards last night, winning the majority of votes from the panel made up of some of America's top film critics from the nation's best-known publishers. Having already found success at the Gotham Awards last month, the latest win for ...Llewyn Davis might further outline the credentials of the latest Coen Brothers film as a potential Oscar contender, having largely been overlooked by most commentators.

Oscar Isaac
The film's star Oscar Isaac was also honoured with the Best Actor award

The film was crowned Best Picture ahead of American Hustle, which came second in the overall voting, and 12 Years a Slave, which placed third. Despite winning yet another award, the Coen Brother's 'a week in the life' tale of a musician traveling through the Greenwich folk scene in 60's New York is still largely considered an outsider for major awards success, however if these gongs keep on piling up for the Coens then the Academy may be persuaded to change their mind somewhat when the votes are cast.

James Franco Attempts To Explain The Phenomena Of The 'Selfie'

James Franco

Why do we love 'selfies'? James Franco attempts to explain the reason.

The ator is qualified to tackle this issue as he is guilty of posting various self-portraits on social media sites and has even been dubbed 'the selfie-king' by the TODAY show on NBC.

The 35 year-old actor wrote a column in The New York Times this past Thursday (Dec 26th) talking about the Instagram craze and how it is the best way of gaining attention, especially for someone who is well-known.

Excellent

With layers of meaning, this offbeat documentary by James Franco and Travis Mathews (I Want Your Love) provokes viewers as we watch its ideas challenge the people who are on-screen. The central issue is artistic expression, more specifically the way sexuality is depicted and censored in the movies.

Franco says that his goal as an artist is to continually shake himself up, and this project offered a specific challenge: "I don't like the fact that I have been brought up to think in a certain way. We can put people killing each other in movies, but we can't put realistic sex." To explore the idea, he goes back to the notorious 1980 thriller Cruising starring Al Pacino as a cop who goes undercover in the gay leather-bar scene to chase a serial killer. The film was the subject of protests while it was shooting and when it was released, and director William Friedkin (hot off his work on The Exorcist) was forced to cut 40 minutes from the film to secure an R rating.

Franco and Mathews' idea here is to recreate these lost 40 minutes, imagining what they could possibly have contained. So they gather a group of actors and a crew and document the process, showing us behind-the-scenes conversations as well as some fairly explicit finished footage. At the centre is Franco's friend Val Lauren, who takes the Pacino role with more than a little trepidation. The charged conversations between Lauren and Franco are the heart of this film, as they waver between fear and excitement over the project. There's clearly a spike of adrenaline for everyone as they all put themselves into an unfamiliar situation, then explore why it feels so uncomfortable.

Homefront Review

OK

With a powerhouse cast and an anaemic script, this violent revenge thriller never quite gets off the ground. It's watchable for the character detail, but resolutely refuses to make any logical sense as it charges through its corny plot. Fortunately the slick filmmaking and charismatic acting hold our attention, adding a hint of sophistication to the bluntly brutal story.

It's set in the Louisiana bayou, where former undercover agent Phil (Statham) is trying to have a quiet life with his young daughter (Vidovic). But the locals are wary of outsiders, and a schoolyard confrontation escalates into a feud between Phil and a resentful woman (Bosworth) who calls her gangster brother Gator (Franco) for help in getting even. Gator quickly discovers Phil's past, then enlists his trashy pal Sheryl (Ryder) to contact Phil's old enemies. But as these ruthless thugs descend on the bayou, they fail to take into consideration the fact that Phil has nearly super-human fighting skills.

There's plenty of possibility in this rather tired premise, but Stallone's boneheaded script never bothers to make things believable, skipping over key details and indulging in trite coincidences. Fleder manages to obscure this with his fluid, pacey direction, and the cast is unusually good for such a simplistic thriller. The charismatic Statham doesn't stretch himself much, occasionally attempting a bit of real acting in the father-daughter scenes (his romance with LeFevre's teacher is never developed). Bosworth and Ryder add some unpredictable edges to their stereotypical roles. And it's Franco who steals the film as an unusually thoughtful redneck thug. Although his moral quandary doesn't put off any of the nastiness.

As I Lay Dying Review

Good

James Franco makes his directing debut with this ambitious adaptation of William Faulkner's notoriously downbeat novel. No surprise: it's extremely grim! It's also a bit too cleverly shot and edited to tell the tale from each character's perspective, which means there's no central point to draw us in emotionally.

The story takes place in rural Mississippi in the early 20th century, where the Bundren family have surrounded Addie (Grant) on her deathbed. Her children are all nearby: daughter Dewey Dell (O'Reilly) stays by her side, Cash (Parrack) saws timber for her coffin, Jewel (Marshall-Green) rides his precious horse to clear his mind, and Darl (Franco) tries to keep everyone happy, including youngest brother Vard (Permenter). But their dad Anse (Nelson) has promised to bury Addie in Jefferson, a three-day journey away. And as they painstakingly make their way across the countryside, each of them has a personal issue to deal with along the way.

All of the characters get a chance to narrate part of the film, which lets us see their inner thoughts and dreams and understand the secrets they are hiding from each other. Along with Franco's use of split screens to show scenes from multiple angles, this essentially makes us all-seeing witnesses to the story, unable to dive in and engage with the raw emotions that are churning around everyone. The film is beautifully shot and acted with real soulfulness, but it also feels eerily dispassionate about these fragile people.

Jason Statham & James Franco Face Off In Explosive 'Homefront' Trailer [Still + Trailer]

Jason Statham James Franco Sylvester Stallone Winona Ryder Kate Bosworth

Homefront is a tense action thriller that wants to poke holes in the typical story of a rural town's collective hostility towards a new family. Based on the Chuck Logan novel of the same name, the film will introduce Logan's much-used character Phil Broker (Jason Statham) to the big screen for the first time and judging by the trailer alone, we should be in for a wild ride when the film is released later this year.

Jason Statham Izabela Vidovic
Things start off blissfully for Broker and his daughter

Broker is an ex-DEA agent (not a former Minnesota cop, as he is in the book) who moves out to a rural town in the south of the United States to begin a new life with his daughter, Maddie (Izabela Vidovic), following the death of his wife. At first, things seem to be as idyllic as Broker would have hoped, with horses to ride, lakes to swim in and a large house to call their own, however things soon take a turn for the worse when Broker's daughter fights back against the school bully.
