Biography

Russell Crowe (07.04.64) is a New Zealand / Australian actor. He is perhaps best known for his Academy Award-winning role in Gladiator.

Childhood: Russell Crowe was born in Wellington in New Zealand. His mother, Jocelyn Yvonne, was a movie caterer, as was his father, John Alexander Crowe. His grandfather, Stan Wemyss was a cinematographer who earned an MBE for his footage of World War II.

The family then returned to New Zealand when Russell was 14. He attended Mt. Roskill Grammar School but left aged 16, in order to pursue his acting career.

Acting Career: Crowe's first professional acting job was in a production of The Rocky Horror Show. The director, Daniel Abineri, later cast him in the lead role of the musical Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom.

Aged 21, Crowe returned once more to Australia He spent six months busking when he could not find work. Eventually, however, he managed to land small roles in Neighbours and Living with the Law.

In 1990, Russell Crowe appeared in The Crossing; his movie debut. He also appeared in Blood Oath (1990), as well as the debut series of Police Rescue.

In 1992, Russell Crowe took a lead role in Romper Stomper, which chronicles the lives of a gang of racist Melbourne skinheads.

Crowe's career continued to escalate and in 2001, he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, for his role in Gladiator. When he attended the ceremony, he wore his grandfather's MBE medal.

In 2002, Crowe won a Best Actor BAFTA Award for his lead role in A Beautiful Mind, though he lost out on the same Oscar title to Denzel Washington. His role in The Insider also earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

He teamed up once again with A Beautiful Mind director, Ron Howard, in Cinderella Man. He also worked again with the director of Gladiator, Ridley Scott, in A Good Year.

He later formed a band called The Ordinary Fear of God, which performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in March 2006.

Personal Life: In 2001, before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, Crowe was warned by the FBI that he was a target for the terrorist group al-Qaeda, as part of a cultural destabilisation plan. He was guarded by Secret Service agents for the next few months.

Russell Crowe Apologises For Joke About "Sodomising" Female Co-Star

Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe has come in for serious criticism after making a joke about “sodomising” a female co-star in the current climate of the post-Harvey Weinstein allegations of sexual abuse and harassment.

The 53 year old actor was presenting an award this week at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts, when he recounted an awkward situation involving a sex scene with co-star Jacquie McKenzie in the 1992 movie Romper Stomper.

In comments that reportedly got left out of the eventual broadcast on Wednesday night (December 6th), Crowe is reported to have said: “I was sodomising Jacqueline McKenzie on the set of Romper Stomper. I didn’t actually intend to do that.”

The Mummy - Featurettes, Clips and Trailer

During a deadly military operation in Egypt, an explosion uncovers an overwhelming secret buried in the sand. Army officer Nick Morton teams up with an archaeologist named Jenny Halsey to investigate the new find, but what looks like an ancient tomb is found very quickly by Halsey to be a prison, which tells of the fate of Ahmanet; the heir to the throne of Egypt. Destined to be queen, Ahmanet's quest for power led her on a murderous rampage when she was alive, and her punishment saw her sealed in her sarcophagus and buried alive. The power has remained, and the discovery has released a dark force that nearly kills them all as they attempt to fly the sarcophagus back to London. Somehow, Nick manages to survive an horrific plane crash completely unscathed, with the spirit of Ahmanet using him to regain her power back. She won't stop until she has seized control on the world that slipped through her grasp all those centuries ago, and London is the first target.

A re-boot of the original 1932 horror (which previously spawned the 1999 trilogy of the same name and the Dwayne Johnson spin-off 'The Scorpion King'), 'The Mummy' is a brand new story based on Egyptian myth. It has been directed by Alex Kurtzman ('People Like Us') and written by Jon Spaihts ('Passengers', 'Doctor Strange', 'Prometheus') and the Academy Award winning Christopher McQuarrie ('The Usual Suspects', 'Jack Reacher', 'Edge of Tomorrow'). The new trailer features a part instrumental of The Rolling Stones hit 'Paint it Black'. 'The Mummy' is set to be released on June 9th 2017.

There are also a number of excellent featurettes to watch. The Zero gravity shoot is particularly fascinating to learn about. To replicate zero gravity, a specially equipped plane must fly to a great height and then basically go into a freefall for 22 seconds - as the time frame is so short, they had to reset the shots over forty times.

Russell Crowe Explains Decision To Turn Down Role As Wolverine

Russell Crowe

For the majority of people, whenever 'X-Men' character Wolverine is brought up, they'll instantly think of Hugh Jackman. He served as the clawed mutant for over a decade ever since his original casting by Bryan Singer in the '2000' superhero movie 'X-Men', and has been entertaining audiences ever since, with his last hoorah as the character in recent R-rated flick 'Logan'.

This however wasn't always to be the case. In fact, Singer had someone completely different in mind when he first came to casting Wolverine, and had hoped that 'Gladiator' star Russell Crowe would be up for taking on the role.

The Mummy Trailer

The tombs and burial chambers in Egypt have long provided fascinated discoveries and lead the world to understand incredibly important facts about ancient times. Down the generations, it's been said that the ancient Egyptian gods, deities and earthly pharaohs had powers beyond those of a normal human.

Thousands of years after the gods walked the earth, we're still as interested in the secrets the ancients held.

There are few details available about the precise plot of the new movie but here's what we do know. When a new tomb is found, work begins to excavate the structure and catalogue its contents. When a mummy's tomb is uncovered, the archaeologists can't believe their luck, wishing to protect and preserve the tomb, the army are called in and asked to transport the structure to London but whilst the freighter is in the air, the team on board find themselves - and the plane - being attacked by a vast swathe of flying creatures.

Gosling And Crowe Had A Lot Of Fun With The Nice Guys

Ryan Gosling Russell Crowe Shane Black

While Gosling has some comedy experience (Crazy Stupid Love, The Big Short), Crowe isn't known for his levity. But he saw more than humour in the project. "I just really liked the density of this script," Crowe says. "I wouldn't have described it necessarily as a comedy because it's full of social commentary and other things that you don't necessarily find in just a comedy."

Crowe knocks Gosling out in The Nice Guys

He laughs when asked about beefing up for the role. "What I decided to do was just to live a completely sedentary life," he says. "What am I going to do, compete with Ryan? So I just decided to go the other way."

Guy Pearce Was Almost Too Hot To Get Hired

Guy Pearce Stephan Elliott Russell Crowe Kevin Spacey Cobie Smulders

Of all the possible reasons why an actor might receive a "no" when auditioning for a part in the cut-throat world of movies, being "too handsome" must rank among the best of them. But that's exactly the fate that almost befell Guy Pearce before he won the part of Adam Whitely/Felicia Jollygoodfellow in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Director Stephan Elliott recently told The Herald Sun that he had reservations about Pearce starring in the 1994 comedy-drama, which follows the adventures of three drag queens, because the young Guy was just so darn good looking:
