Gabrielle Aplin - 2017 Interview

An interview with Gabrielle Aplin

It'd be ungentlemanly to mention a lady's age, and mightily crass to harp on about how well a young person has done for their age. Let's just say that Gabrielle Aplin has made two massive albums and is a global star, but she'd defo still get ID'd buying cider at Tesco. It's enviable. It could even be sickening, were she not so refreshingly down-to-earth and such splendid conversation.

Gabrielle spoke to Contact Music backstage at the Leopallooza festival in Cornwall recently, prior to her Main Stage headline slot on the final evening. Festival-goers had partied through a fun- and mud-filled few days, but the clouds politely held off so that we could hug, sway and dance through her varied set feeling dry and uplifted. If more festivals took Leopallooza's bold line and booked more female headliners, it would undoubtedly help to bring added diversity to the currently saturated festival scene.

Subsequent to our chat, summer banger, "Waking Up Slow" came out on August 9th and will form part of the "Avalon" EP. Play it and see if you can manage to keep still for three-and-a-half-minutes. Bet you can't.

Vant The Cribs Gabrielle Aplin

There are seven stages at Leopallooza, including The Temple of Boom, where you can have a spiritual experience to the beats, breaks and bass curated by Cornish DJ collective, Hong Kong Ping Pong. Falmouth's esteemed bar, Mono, curates and lends its name to the alternative stage. They've got dance wrapped up at The Treeline, laughter at the Punkomedy Stage and new talent at the BBC Introducing Cornwall Stage. The Main Arena has two stages, so that the music can alternate from one to the other, forgoing the need for lengthy changeovers. Throw in over 100 new and established acts, plenty of kids' activities, camping, plus excellent food and drink and you've got every reason to make the pilgrimage.

Abba's greatest hits collection, Gold, edged past the The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band this weekend to become the second highest selling album in UK history. The band have now sold over 5.1million copies of their greatest hits album, with the Official Charts Company indicating over the weekend that the album has surpassed Sgt. Pepper's by 15,000 sales.

The album now only sits behind another best of collection, Queen's Greatest Hits, which has so far sold 5.9million copies. The rest of the top five consists of Adele’s 21, which is 4th having sold 4.6million copies, with Oasis’ 1995 sophomore release (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? completing the top five, selling slightly less than Adele. Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, ABBA founder and songwriter Björn Ulvaeus spoke of his shock at the achievement, saying, 'It’s feels unreal - outselling the greatest record of all time!'

Rod Stewart Ends 34-Year Wait To Climb To The Top Of The UK Album Chart Again

Rod Stewart Gabrielle Aplin Agnetha Faltskog

Singer Rod Stewart is currently re-living the glory years of his career after seeing his latest album, Time, shoot to the top of the UK Album Chart this Sunday (May 19); his first to reach the coveted position since his 1979 Greatest Hits collection.

Stewart wasn't the only 70's star to dart up the album chart with a new release either, as former Abba singer Agnetha Faltskog's return to music saw the singer's A album climb tho number 6.

The last number one single for the singer came thirty years ago, when 1983's 'Baby Jane' reached the top of the charts and following the fantastic success of his album, now looks as goood a time as ever for the singer to end that drought too. Speaking about the success of his album, the singer told reporters that he was 'very proud' of the achievement, adding that he thanks a long life of experience and God for his enduring success. He said; 'I've lived a wonderful life and when I was putting the book [his autobiography] together it inspired many of the songs. If there's anything that God gave, and some people may disagree, he gave me a tremendous vehicle in my voice. It's just very unique, so I was just lucky to be given this voice.'

A Week In Music - Classic Blues From Ben Harper And Charlie Musselwhite, Raunchy Videos From The Weeknd, Jay Z And Justin Timberlake, Get Up Close And Personal With Rihanna In 'Stay'

Albums Of Note... Get Up! pairs modern blues idol and expert slide guitarist Ben Harper with harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. Aiming for blues authenticity, that’s exactly what Ben and Charlie achieve here. The pair of talented blues musicians fly in the face of modernity and instead strive to recreate the dusky glamour of a Chicago blues club.

In general, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite have delivered a strong, yet candid and fun blues album. This album really does not care that it is 2013, and why should it? Each of the ten songs contains something of merit. Both musicians involved are fairly prolific but this collection will doubtlessly shoot to the high end of the fans favourites in no time at all.”

TV commercials have always been a time for fresh, new and unheard song covers to emerge as well as the old classics especially during the holiday season, just to make the product invoke that little bit of nostalgia to fuel the Christmas shopping fever.

This year is no different as we have, of course, rising star Gabrielle Aplin with her stunning rendition of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1984 hit 'Power of Love' recorded for John Lewis' new seasonal advert. It has already reached number one in the UK and is set to also feature on her upcoming debut album 'English Rain'. In fact, people have loved it so much that Twinings tea have also snapped up the tune for their advert which will no doubt help Aplin's career skyrocket over the coming months.

John Lewis Christmas Advert 2012, Song? It's Frankie Goes To Hollywood! (VIDEO)

The John Lewis Christmas advert for 2012 is here, which means it's officially Christmas, doesn't it? Or is that the Coca Cola ad? Either way, the retail giant has unveiled a £6 million clip that will no doubt bring a tear to the eyes of mothers' everywhere as they prepare for the busy festive season.

The 90-second commercial has all the hallmarks of a John Lewis Christmas advert and this year features the adventurous journey of a snowman going in search of the perfect present for his love. It opens with two children building their snowy creation in the garden, before being called in by their mother. The next morning, the little girl gazes out from her window only to find that the snowman has vanished - the snowwoman remains. We're then taken on an epic journey in which the snowman battles rivers, mountains and motorways to reach John Lewis. Of course in the final scene, the girl gazes out again to see the Snowcouple reunited, a piece of wrapping paper lies on the ground while the Snowwoman shows off a fancy new scarf. The heart-warming advert - filmed in New Zealand in July - features the slogan, "give a little more love this Christmas" and features a stripped back version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's The Power of Love. It's sang by Gabrielle Aplin, a little known singer-songwriter from Bath who rose to fame after posting a cover of the You Me At Six song The Liar and the Lighter on YouTube. The clip has since had over 620,000 views.

John Lewis will no doubt be hoping the advert will be as successful as its predecessor. The 2011 clip featured a 7-year-old boy waiting impatiently for Christmas day, though when the morning finally arrived he ignored his own gifts and rushed to give his parents their presents. The new advert will be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight at 9.10pm, during a commercial break in Derren Brown's Apocalypse.
