The Secret Life Of Pets Review

Very Good

From the team behind Despicable Me and Minions, this high-energy adventure makes up for its rather simplistic story by filling the screen with lively characters, silly dialog and colourful animation. There's nothing terribly distinctive about the movie, as most of the gags feel recycled and everything bounces across the surface without generating any resonance either in the humour or emotions. But it's a lot of fun while it lasts.

In a cosy Manhattan apartment, the happy rescue dog Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) lives with his owner Katie (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Ellie Kemper). The moment she steps out of the door on the way to work, he's already bored and waiting for her to come home. So he hangs out with the other pets in the neighbourhood, including lovelorn pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) and food-obsessed cat Chloe (Lake Bell). Then Katie brings home another stray, the gigantic brown furball Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who immediately starts challenging Max's alpha-dog status. As war breaks out between them, they find themselves stranded in the city, caught up with a sewer-dwelling gang of abandoned pets led by the adorable but intense bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart). Meanwhile, Gidget and Chloe recruit some help to find them, including a grumpy hawk (Albert Brooks) and an ageing basset hound (Dana Carvey).

The plot basically consists of a series of chaotic chase sequences that build up to a climactic scene straight out of a Die Hard movie. Each character and plot element is over-constructed, which eliminates any sense of honest emotion or loose interaction, but the characters are likeable simply because they're so ridiculous. The animators use a lot of colour and a tactile variety of furry textures. And the actors have a lot of fun with the characters. Hart is, of course, the scene-stealer as the fast-talking kingpin who uses his cuteness as a weapon. And while C.K. and Stonestreet are endearing as the story's protagonists, it's Slate and Bell who win over the audience in the funniest, most complex roles.

The Secret Life Of Pets Trailer

Ever wondered what your pets get up to when you're not around? Well, put it this way; your furniture, kitchen appliances, soft furnishings and even tomorrow's dinner are not safe. Some pets are ever faithful, however, such as the terrier Max who is showered with attention from his loving owner. But things get complicated when he is introduced to his owner's new pet; a mongrel named Duke, who he is determined not to let become the favourite. While they might not initially get on, their rivalry is the least of their worries when they discover that a resentful neighbourhood rabbit named Snowball is organising a plot of vengeance against all the well-loved pets in town, as well as their owners, on behalf of those less fortunate who have been abandoned on the street.

Meet The 'Modern Family' Cast That Could Have Been (But We're Glad Wasn't)

Craig T Nelson Ed O'Neill Kristen Johnston Lisa Kudrow Jesse Tyler Ferguson Eric Stonestreet Ty Burrell Julie Bowen

We can’t imagine a more perfect cast that the one that Modern Family already has. Every single of one of them has made the roles their own, almost like they were written with them in mind. So you’ll be surprised to hear that hardly any of them were the first choice for the parts! But who did the producers have lined up before the perfect cast finally came together?

Modern Family Alternate Cast Craig T. Nelson was first choice to play Modern Family patriarch Jay Pritchett

Family patriarch Jay Pritchett was originally pegged to be played by Emmy Award winner Craig T. Nelson. Best known for his role as Hayden Fox in Coach and as the voice of Mr. Incredible in the 2004 animated film The Incredibles, producers originally approached Nelson although his pay expectations were too high. Ed O’Neill, who the role eventually went to (and who just IS Jay) explained, “When I read [the script] I thought, ‘Oh boy, this is pretty good.’ And I called my managed and he said, ‘Well, they’re out to Craig T. Nelson.’” We’re grateful that they couldn’t afford Nelson because no-one plays grumpy good guy Jay Pritchard quite like Ed O’Neill.  We're also sure that Nelson is kicking himself since Sofia Vergara could have been his onscreen wife!  We wonder if he'd known that to begin with it would have made a difference?

KISS Rockers Deny Bullying Eric Stonestreet's Mother On A Flight

Eric Stonestreet Kiss Gene Simmons

Kiss musicians Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have hit back at claims made by actor Eric Stonestreet alleging that the rockers were rude to his mother, Jamey Anne, on a flight. The Modern Family star kept his fans up to date with his mother's travels and started by posting a screenshot of an excitable text conversation with his mother when she had spotted the rock and roll superstars on her plane.

"I think Gene Simmons is on my flight," texted Jamey, adding "Do you think I should go give him a kiss?" However, things apparently soon turned sour, as Stonestreet revealed in another Instagram message.

"Turns out both Gene Simmons AND Paul Stanley were on my mom's flight to Kansas City. Gene tried to bully my mom out of her seat and when she said no, he said, 'It's ok, I just bought the plane' and then asked her for HER autograph. - d**k move... The Paul (sic) called her 'Aunt Bee' - d**k move," he wrote.

Watch Seth Rogen's (And Others) Auditions For 'The Office' [Video]

Steve Carell Seth Rogen Bob Odenkirk John Cho Eric Stonestreet Kathryn Hahn

Audition tapes are probably… the best thing ever, especially when well-known stars are going for roles. These Office auditions, in which the hopefuls are reading the script from the British version of the award-winning sitcom, are priceless.

Seth Rogen as Dwight? Bob Odenkirk as Michael, and, more importantly, not as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad because of commitment to The Office, John Cho or Adam Scott as Jim? Eric Stonestreet as Kevin and Kathryn Hahn as Pam? No way – this is all very wrong. Apart from Stonestreet, the Modern Family actor does a brilliant stoney-faced Kevin, and is truly reminiscent of Keith – the cult hero from the original series.

As you’ll know, if you’re a fan of The Office, none of these actors got any parts. And as a fan of The Office, you’ll be pleased to know these autions are part of the bonus features on Season 9’s DVD boxset. Back in March, Rainn Wilson, who did get a part in The Office, and kept it, released a photo of the original audition list for the U.S. series, which included Mary Lynn Rajskub, Hamish Linklater and Anne Dudek.

Eric Stonestreet, Charlize Theron: Are They Really Dating?

Eric Stonestreet Charlize Theron Halle Berry

Eric Stonestreet, Charlize Theron? Really? The Twitter universe came alive over the weekend with rumors that the Modern Family star was dating the Hollywood beauty. The story actually began in the pages of Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper, which claimed “things are blossoming” between Stonestreet and Theron.

A ‘source’ told the newspaper, “Eric is down to earth and funny and Charlize thinks the world of him. It’s early days but they’re very fond of each other,” though funny-man Stonestreet quickly took to Twitter to silence the rumormongers in his own inimitable way, saying, “I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating…It’s starting to make Halle Berry jealous.” The actor’s representative later issued a more formal denial of the story, telling People magazine, “There is nothing romantic going on between them. He has only met Charlize twice!” Despite Stonestreet rejecting the rumors, there was still speculation that Charlize and he would walk the red-carpet together at the 2012 Emmy Awards on Sunday.

In the end it wasn’t Theron – or Halle Berry for that matter – who accompanied the actor to the Emmys. Before the show, he tweeted, “Today I’m taking my best friend Paul to the Emmys. He dared me to audition for the first play I ever did.”
