Alejandro González Iñárritu Is DGA Award Champion For The Second Year In A Row

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Directors Guild Of America

Alejandro González Iñárritu was part of a landmark moment at the 68th Annual Directors Guild Of America awards when he became the first director ever to win the top prize for two consecutive years, with 'The Revenant' no doubt drawing him ever closer to the big prize at the Academy Awards.

With the Mexican born director landing the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film award, it also marks a new turn in the diversity debate; it's true he hasn't been shunned by the Oscars as film stars of other races have, but the fact that someone from outside the States has been recognised for his achievements yet again after last year's 'Birdman' is surely a step in the right direction (if you'll pardon the pun).

The first set of nominees for the 68th Annual Directors Guild Of America Awards have now been announced, with nods for the category of Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2015 featuring five directors from some of the biggest film favourites of the year.

Predictably, Alejandro G. Iñárritu is up there for 'The Revenant'; a visceral biopic which won three awards at the Golden Globes this year (Best Drama, Director and Actor in a Drama with Leonardo DiCaprio). He was previously nominated for 2006's 'Babel', won the award for his 2014 movie 'Birdman', and also won Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials for Procter & Gamble's 'Best Job' campaign in 2012. Ridley Scott is another DGA staple who's once again looking at this award for 'The Martian' starring Matt Damon; another Golden Globes favourite with two awards under its belt. He has yet to win at the DGA's, but this is his fourth time nominated following 1990's 'Thelma and Louise', 1999's Gladiator and 2000's 'Black Hawk Down'.

Alfonso Cuaron Improves His Oscar Chances Even Further With DGA Award Win

Alfonso Cuaron looks like a firm favourite to take home the Academy Award for Best Director when the Oscars roll around this March. The Gravity director was given the top gong at last night's (25 Jan.) Directors Guild Of America Awards, an honour than can only heighten his chances of taking home Hollywood's top prize in a few weeks.

In only seven instances in the DGA Awards' 66 year history has the Best Director Oscar gone to someone who has not won the top honour for directors, with the last instance of this happening coming last year when Ben Affleck won the award, but was not even nominated for the Best Director category at the Oscars for his work on Argo. According to Oddschecker.com, Cuaron is the odds on favourite to take home the Best Director gong in March's ceremony, with 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen his nearest competitor.

Ben Affleck continued his winter dominance of awards season at the Directors Guild Of America Awards on Saturday (February 2nd) as he picked up the event's top prize to further cement his film Argo's reckoning as the favorite for the much-coveted best picture prize at the Oscars this month (February 24, 2013). Affleck has been on an absolute sweep since the disappointment of missing out on the shortlist for the Oscars best director category; Argo has won the best picture at the Producers Guild of America Awards, best picture at the Critics Choice Awards and best picture at the Golden Globes. Affleck himself meanwhile has picked up a couple of best director gongs at the Critics Choic and the Golden Globes.
