Graduates of the Maharishi University Of Management got a special treat last weekend when they not only witnessed Jim Carrey receive his honorary doctorate, they also got to hear him make an emotional and inspirational speech. Taking to the podium, Carrey delivered his many words of wisdom with a smile, offering some sincere and heartfelt to anyone with a dream to follow and making sure every graduate left feeling a little less fearful of the future.

Jim CarreyJim Carey received an honorary doctorate from the Iowa university

Carrey’s speech was of course packed with as many laughs as you’d expect from the rubber faced comedian, but what was more memorable was the advice he gave to the young graduates. Drawing from his own personal experiences and that of his father, Carey encouraged all of us to follow our dreams and not be afraid to ask the universe for big things.

He explained how his father, who died in 1994, could have been a great comedian but he didn't believe that was possible for him. Instead he made a conventional choice, taking a safe job as an accountant. His father eventually lost his safe job when Jim was 12, causing the family to have to do whatever they could to survive. Carey said, “I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

Carrey acknowledged that like many of the students he'd been “concerned about going out into the world and doing something bigger than myself.” But his mindset soon changed, when “someone smarter” made him realise that there is nothing bigger than himself. For Carrey, he found the key was “letting the universe know what you want and working toward it.” “Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen for you,” he said. “It’s opening a door in your head, and when the door opens in real life, just walk through it.”

For the students listening, many of whom will be just starting out on the path toward fulling their dreams, Carrey had some inspirational words on how we should deal with our fears. He told the students that “Fear is going to be a player in life, but you get to decide how much.” Explaining that “So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it.” But Carrey also added that if our dreams don’t come true right away it might be because the universe is so busy fulfilling his order.

After Carrey was given his honorary degree, he ended on laugh saying, “It’s a good thing they are giving this to someone who has conquered their ego.” But really Jim, it’s a good thing they gave it to someone who could offer up so much inspiration and leave the students with words we're sure they'll carry with them forever. Well done Jim!
