Idris Elba, Barbara Windsor and Blur frontman Damon Albarn were among those recognised in this year’s New Year’s Honours List. ‘Luther’ actor Elba was recognised with an OBE for his services to drama and said he ‘couldn’t be more proud’ to receive the honour.

“Awards and honours come in all shapes and sizes, and all as significant as the other,” Elba said. “But this is beyond special as it comes from Queen and country, and I couldn’t be more proud for receiving this right now. What a year. On me head, son!”

Veteran actress Barbara Windsor was made a dame, for services to drama as well as her charity work. “For a girl from the East End born into a working class family and an evacuee during World War Two, this is truly like a dream," Windsor said. “I am so happy and blessed to say it’s real.”

Blur frontman Damon Albarn was made an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) along with actors James Nesbitt and David Oyelowo. Imelda Staunton was recognised with a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).

Drum and bass music Goldie received an MBE, recognising his contribution to music, TV and film as well as his charity work. “Very very proud to announce that I have been awarded an MBE – Member of the Order of the British Empire,” he said on Facebook.
