Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness - Single Review
Idlewild
Love Steals Us From Loneliness
(Parlophone)
Release Date: 21 February 2005
Opening track of Idlewild’s new album, Love Steals Us From Loneliness is a melancholic yet angry ballad, carrying a majestic sound and Roddy Woomble’s typical introspection. Lyrics such as “You said something stupid like love steals us from loneliness…happy birthday, are you lonely yet?” are the cry of someone shattered and confused, thousands of miles away from his
home, contemplating the night and trying to stop someone else’s illusion entering into his mind. All of this, immersed in a sea of guitar and bass layers contributing to create that thick and noisy rock sound Idlewild are renowned for. There’s emotion and loneliness here, depicted very well in the track’s video – showing Roddy and Irish actress Alexandra McGuinness finding themselves in the same room, but acting like they’re alone, even though physically together. This is a potent single, growing and growing at every listen, and it’s the perfect introduction to the new album. Idlewild’s best album so far.
