Universal have finally announced the release date for the big screen adaptation of mega-popular Broadway show Wicked. The musical will hit theatres on Dec. 20, 2019, which coincidentally is the same date Disney has already announced for their as-yet-to-be-revealed live-action fairy-tale.

The film will be helmed by Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry, who is best known for Billy Elliot and The Hours. Producing for studio Universal will be Marc Platt, who has also produced the Broadway show since its beginning.

The script will be based on Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and will see Broadway writers Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz reunited. The plot is based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, but this time the events are told from the perspective of the witches.

Wicked first opened on Broadway in 2003 and the original production starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. There’s no word yet on who will be cast in the big screen version, but last month Menzel and Chenoweth reunited for the first time in 12 years, at a gala honouring producer David Stone.
