Hugh Laurie has topped a poll to appear in the 'Doctor Who' movie.

It was announced last week that 'Harry Potter' director David Yates is to make a film based on the hit sci-fi drama and now the 'House' actor - who is the world's highest-paid TV actor - has came out on top in a survey of over 7,000 people to find who should portray the Time Lord on the big screen.

Chris Tilly, UK Entertainment Editor of IGN.com who conducted the survey, said: "As one of the UK's most celebrated TV characters of all-time, fans are thrilled about the prospect of a 'Doctor Who' movie, with talk immediately turning to who should play the lead role. And with his combination of wit, intelligence, charm and eccentricity, Hugh Laurie was the runaway winner of our poll, with fans believing the Brit to be the perfect man to play the Time Lord on the big screen."

Hugh beat off competition from 'Harry Potter' actor Gary Oldman and 'X-Men: First Class' star Michael Fassbender, who placed second and third respectively.

Scottish actors James McAvoy and Ewan McGregor completed the top five.
