David Fincher HBO

David Fincher’s relationship with HBO is on the ropes this summer, with news that both of his projects with the network are in trouble of some description. His ‘80s music video comedy was abruptly halted back in June, and now his re-make of ‘Utopia’ looks to be in financial difficulties.

Fincher, who was an executive producer on ‘House of Cards’ for Netflix, had been set to work on both projects in tandem a few months ago, but now the cable network HBO is trying to figure out how to move forward with his dramatic adaptation of ‘Utopia’ as well as salvaging ‘Video Synchronicity’, which has been out of production for nearly two months.

Trailblazing HBO To Launch Streaming Video Service In 2015

HBO

Ever keen to get involved in forward-thinking, innovative television, HBO has announced it will launch a streaming video service in 2015 that will not require users to have a cable or satellite subscription. Essentially, it will give Netflix customers - who pay for relatively expensive subscriptions - food for thought. HBO's move could change the whole cable television landscape.

George R. R. Martin HBO

George R.R. Martin promised that he’d write in and gruesomely kill a new character And the winner of that Prizeo.com competition was Dave Goldblatt, a product specialist who reigns from San Francisco. The Facebook employee threw down $20k for the opportunity to be an actual character in the next Song of Ice and Fire book, and then be brutally killed off in Martin’s patented style.

"I’m just lucky enough to be in a position to do this," Goldblatt said of the $20,000 prize. "Obviously, the money is going to charity, so it’s an added bonus. I didn’t immediately seek to help wolf sanctuaries, but the more I read about the charities, I learned it was a worthwhile cause." (ABC)

Look Out Spotify – Amazon Launches Audio Streaming Service ‘Prime Music’

HBO James Gandolfini

Amazon is tipping it toe into the saturated online music streaming business by launching ‘Prime Music’ – its own service that will be available free for subscribers of Amazon Prime. It launched on Thursday (June 12) with over 1 million songs from some of the world’s most popular artists, including Beyonce, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna.

Game Of Thrones Vs. The Sopranos: Is Popularity Indicative Of Quality?

James Gandolfini HBO Game Of Thrones

The inevitable news that Game Of Thrones surpassed The Sopranos as HBO’s most ‘popular’ show arrived, rather pertinently, via a Tweet. "Raise a glass of Arbor gold. #GameofThrones is the most popular series in @HBO history. Thanks to the worldwide realm for all your support," it read.

The SopranosJames Gandolfini died in 2013

The Tweet is pertinent because it neatly frames Game of Thrones in history. HBO’s epic, multifaceted fantasy drama has thrived in a culture of sharing, spoiler warnings and episode discussion. As an online entertainment writer, I hear about GoT probably 8 million times a day. Those not involved in the industry will only see it cross their radar a few thousand times.

John Oliver Rallies The Internet Trolls To Give The FCC Hell

John Oliver HBO

John Oliver is using his position as satirical-sideways-swiper for good, it would seem. His latest target is the FCC and ‘net neutrality’, and he addressed them in a rousing, 13-minute-long segment from his new-ish HBO show, ‘Last Week Tonight’.

John OliverJohn Oliver holding a picture of John Oliver at the Reddit Meta awards

With his burgeoning brand of sarcasm, cheap punch lines and scathing one-liners, Oliver took what seemed like a lifetime of pent up aggression out on the decision makers and beneficiaries of the proposed changes to net neutrality, which would grant the big money companies access to a high speed service, while the internet minnows would be left scrambling in the slow lane. Except it wasn't a lifetime of aggresion: Oliver is rallying the troops for an important battle, using comedy as his conduit for compliance.

Nic Pizzolatto put the sincerity and quality of True Detective’s story over multiple seasons of the show, asserting that a strict 8-episode format would be condusive to a strong third act. And judging by the critical claim he’s received – his creation is being talked about in the same breath as The Wire – one is inclined to trust the man who risked everything to write the new HBO anthology series.

True DetectiveWoody Harrelson [L] and Matthew McConuaghey [R] as Hart and Cohle in 'True Detective'

“One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story,” explained Pizzolatto.

Jonathan Groff Murray Bartlett HBO

HBO premiered their latest series last night (19 Jan.), the San Francisco-set Looking, a show about finding the right right partner and who you are in the world. The newly premiered comedy drama managed to draw in promising audience numbers and even more promising critical praise, with a number of early reviews for the show already declaring to fans of the premium cable network that HBO have produced yet another show to become obsessed with. Gaining comparisons to much-praised series Girls, the show promises so much more than being 'Girls with guys' as this modern-day sitcom looks to lift the lid on the still-relatively taboo nature of same-sex relationships in a way that has hardy been done before.

HBO's 'Life According To Sam' Is An Uplifting, Enlightening Doc. It's Honest, Too

HBO

Often, documentaries surrounding a rare and incurable disease are contrived and have the specific goal to make their audiences feel bad and moved to action. HBO’s Life According to Sam doesn’t subscribe to any of those tropes, and doesn’t stoop to cheap tricks to garner sympathy.

Dr. Leslie Gordon and Dr. Scott Berns learned that their two-year-old son, Sam, had progeria back in 1998. Progeria is extremely rare – only 300 cases have been reported in the world. It’s a progressive aging disorder that weakens its victims every day. Sam, though, has outlived his expectancy, as most kids with the affliction pass from a heart attack or a stroke aged – on average – 13.

It’s a morbid subject, but HBO approached the doc with both style an honesty, which culminated in an immensely watchable, heart-warming but not patronising piece. It also highlights just how important Gordan and Scott Bern’s research was for both their child as the field of medicine.
