Gov't Mule High and Mighty Album

Back in the day, when bands like Free and Mountain ruled the earth, men and boys enjoyed a meaty, muscular rock that did without frills or any other niceties.

Warren Haynes' main day job is as lead singer and co-lead guitarist in the Allman Brothers (yes, they're still going), and it is nice to see him put some distance between that Southern Rock-fest, and edge his own band into a fantastically pure 70s driving blues rock space - think Deep Purple brought up to date.

Haynes vocals are more 'reliably good' than outstanding, but the core of the music is clearly the guitar that provides the driving riffs and the remarkable solos. That said, the band do take turns through reggae, funk and harder rock, suggesting excellent versatility. If you've missed the uncomplicated air guitar music of your youth, Gov't Mule fill that space in your soul.
