Former Spice Girl Geri Horner has described her time on the ‘Great Sport Relief Bake Off’ as ‘liberating’. The 43-year-old appeared on this year’s series of the charity baking contest and revealed that her time on the show helped her relationship with food, after battling bulimia in her 20s.

Speaking to You Magazine, Horner said she had agreed to do the show because of her nine-year-old daughter Bluebell, who’s a big fan. But the experience turned into something much bigger for Horner.

‘Throughout my 20s, I had bulimia. Even when I’d recovered from it, I had a distant relationship with food,’ she explained. 'I wanted to be a healthy example for my daughter, so I tried to have balance. But to bake properly and celebrate cake rather than run from it was such a landmark for me.'

'The creativity of baking something is like writing a song; it’s a mood-changer.’ She also enjoyed getting to know fellow contestant journalist John Simpson and hearing his stories about interviewing Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

‘At the same time as we were making our biscuits, he was telling me how he interviewed Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden, which led eventually to Bin Laden putting a price on his head –and yet he was quite scared doing his biscuits,’ Horner said.

Last year Horner wed Infiniti Red Bull Formula One team principal Christian Horner and is now settling in to married life. 'I get it now. I remember when Victoria [got married], my focus was just our group of women,' she said.

'I couldn’t understand why anything else would be chosen over us. Now I understand why women prioritise relationships. But they’ve got to be worth it.'
