The Hollywood actor and his lawyer wife picked up a basset hound mix named Millie from the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society shelter on Wednesday (28Oct15).

The dog was found begging for scraps outside a local restaurant before being taken in by the shelter.

Bosses of the centre have shared a picture of the couple with their new addition and thanked them for taking the pooch in.

"It was a happy day at the shelter for Millie!" a statement from the shelter reads. "Millie was found without a home and hoping for food scraps outside of a local restaurant in San Gabriel earlier this month. Today her luck changed for the better when she was adopted by George and Amal Clooney... They were searching for a basset hound and saw Millie's picture on (adoption website) Petfinder. They did a 'meet and greet' with her ... and the happy, new family headed home together!... Congratulations to the Clooney family and thank you for adopting!"

The couple also has a rescued cocker spaniel mix named Einstein and cocker spaniel named Louie, and George is a well-known animal-lover and spent 18 years as the owner of a pot-bellied pig named Max, who died in 2006.

He previously cited Max as "the longest relationship of my life", adding, "It's strange how animals become a big part of your family. They really become a big issue with you."

George also revealed how Max once took a flight in John Travolta's private jet, joking, "(He) absolutely loved it".
