Gabrielle Aplin caps off a very productive and creative year with her latest release dropping on the last day of 2020. 'When The Lights Go Out' follows Aplin's delicate cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's iconic song 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' and is her first original solo release since 'My Mistake' back in May of 2020.
In the interim Gabrielle has not been quiet, she's hooked up with all manner of people on numerous collaborations including, The Coronas ('Lost In The Thick Of It'), Anna Straker ('Good Days Bad Days'), Kodaline ('Everyone Changes') and TSHA ('Change'). For the new single, 'When The Lights Go Out', Aplin has chosen to go it alone once again and has kept things relatively simple.
'When The Lights Go Out' is a relaxed dance oriented track that is both chilled out and laid back but has just enough underlying energy to keep you focused. The arrangement and production are subtle and unintrusive, letting the beat guide the track as Aplin's silken vocals sing out.
Upon it's release Aplin said, "I have a new song out today that I wanted to share with you all! I wrote this song shortly after the release of my album 'Dear Happy'. It’s about being seen for who you are and I really felt it belonged with the songs on 'Dear Happy'. I wanted to make a song that felt like a hug that you can also dance to and I’m considering it the song that closes the 'Dear Happy' book".
Unsurprisingly it is Gabrielle Aplin's voice that is the song's irresistible and undoubted highlight on her new single. "Being with you is easy" Aplin sings, "Easy as breathing", "The way you complete me, so incompletely, only you can see me when the lights go out".
Throughout 'When The Lights Go Out' Aplin manages to hit a sweet spot where her performance embraces both an alluring torch singer as well as the most captivating of pop stars and that's what makes this song so appealing.
