Qalli and Aivaaq have lived their entire lives in Barrow, Alaska, which sees six months of sunlight a year. They are both preparing to make the transition into adulthood - Qalli is heading to college, while Aivaaq's girlfriend has fallen pregnant.
One night, they head to a house party with their mutual friend, James. They can't stay late, though - the boys need to be up early the next day to go seal hunting. Aivaaq and James manage to get themselves up the next morning and head onto the ice to hunt but Qalli is running late. By the time he arrives, Aivaaq and James are fighting. Things soon turn ugly very quickly when James is fatally stabbed.
Aivaaq and Qalli are stunned by what they've done but soon fabricate a story in which James fell from the ice and drowned. But straightaway their plans have holes - tracks in the snow tell everyone where you've been and blood isn't exactly hard to spot on the pristine snow. The boys shovel the blood specked snow into a bin liner, and push James' body into the sea.
For a few weeks, it seems like they have got away with it. But Qalli's father is suspicious about the boys' involvement in the death of James. Will he find out Qalli and Aivaaq's deadly secret?
