Veteran Actor Al Pacino Has Credited Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola With Saving Him From Walking Away From His Big Break In The Godfather After Studio Bosses Made It Clear They Did Not Want The Then-unknown Actor In A Leading Role.
The Scarface star was cast as Michael Corleone, the son of Marlon Brando's mafia boss Don Vito Corleone, but he almost quit because he didn't want to stay where he wasn't wanted.
He tells ABC News, "They (studio heads) wanted to fire me when I was on the picture... (during) the shooting, first couple of weeks, because they kept seeing the rushes, you know, or the footage that was shot, and they kept looking at it and thinking, 'What is he doing?'"
He continues, "I was so confused at that time, and Francis was so supportive, you know, and so helping me in it, all of it. If it wasn't for Francis, I would’ve just not showed up one day and said, ‘Hey, look man, I don't want to be where I'm not wanted.’"
Pacino eventually won over movie bosses with his performance in the 1972 film, which has since become a Hollywood classic, and he reprised the role in two sequels.
