It's January 1945, World War II is in its final year food is short and moral in the little village in Holland where 13 year old Michiel lives is low. Michiel is the son of the Mayor and his father wishes for his son to stay out of trouble and above all, stop trying to join the underground resistance to which his uncle Ben belongs.
When Michiel's neighbour asks him to deliver an envelope containing vital information for The Resistance fighters, the offer is too big for him to pass up. After Michiel accepts his mission Dirk is captured by the German army and he also witnesses the murder of the man who should've received the envelope. Holding the secrets of the Resistance in his hands, Michiel decides to open the envelope which contains a map through the woods to a undercover foxhole, inside is Jack, a British Pilot. Jack treats Michiel as untrustworthy but knows he's his only chance of survival. As their relationship develops Michiel begins to learn just how much trust Jack must put into their friendship in order to save his life, a lesson that also means Michiel must grow up and become a man by facing the truth head on.
